Here are my reasons why Rebecca Black's new song will not be received well by people. 1.Her new song is sort of like self empowering song, which addresses her haters with imaginary video depicting her becoming popular(in a positive way).Which looked too melodramatic because she is not popular, in reality. 2.Auto-tune(When I heard it, I stopped playing the video) 3.Poor song selection 4.It's like trying to build a home in a place destroyed by fire, and that place is still burning. People need time to see her as a respected singer. Maybe she should have taken a break for few years before making songs. Last edited by machoman; 07-19-2011 at 03:55 PM. |

2. Auto-Tune made her famous in the first place. Plus, look at common pop trends – not everyone is like you. Most aren't, actually. 3. I didn't like the song either, but what does that have to do with anything? 4. Absolutely not. Give her just a few more months and no one will remember who the hell she was. A few year break? Rebecca Black who? This is probably the only time something like this could work and her producers know it. Hell, her video already has over a million views and will very likely breeze past 10 million. Do you know how many artists can do this? You could probably count them with two hands. P.S. - I don't see how this is really worth discussing in World Affairs, but whatever!

She is only 14 something. I find it ridiculous people encourage her to make songs even though they are terrible compared with other artists. Even if people do forget about her, it might have been a fresh start for her career. And the thing about viral videos is that people will never forget them as long as Internet is there. If she had taken a few years break and focus on improving her abilities, she would have been an inspiring story.

In my opinion, everyone who makes a big deal about hating Rebecca Black (or other people, like Justin Bieber) is what some Internet folk like to call "butthurt." It means that you only hate her because she is more successful than you are. In other words, you are jealous that she is famous and making thousands of dollars in iTunes sales (she is!) at such a young age and with so little work involved (it only took her ONE music video). I'm not saying that Kanye West is well-respected, but have you heard his music? He can't even sing at all. Pretty much every song he makes is 100% auto-tuned. Yet somehow, he sells millions of songs and is known as a big figure in the music industry. Most people probably don't care about auto-tune at all; they just want a song that sounds good. i think the girl has some talent..not much but she does have it, autotune seems to hide this. The reason she was made fun of was because of the lyrics she had to sing, so if anyone is to blame its arkmusic, and if you check their channel, they only sponsor 12-13 year olds which i find a bit creepy since they write the lyrics for them and the videos. anyway i dont think many people know this but the only reason she became popular was because her song was posted in 4chan's /b/ by the mods as background music and it was up there for a few days. I saw the video when it only had a few hundred views, and if you know /b/ they're pretty bad people. But i do agree her new song is a bit dull. |

If you look at famous singers, almost all of them started their careers while they were young, and eventually worked their way up to being famous. As for the ArkMusic videos, most of the lyrics are mediocre at best. But the actual production value of the music videos is high, and they make them for relatively cheap (like $4000) when making an actual music video for a famous artist can easily cost $100k+. I think they just found a niche (parents/moms whose daughters want to be singers) and are good at exploiting it. At least, this is what I see in them as a business-savvy guy myself. Also, all of their music videos tend to get a few hundred thousand views each, so really the parents of the children are paying for 1) experience for their child 2) production of a portfolio piece that the child can show to real studios and 3) possible exposure to professionals who would want to work with them. Many people don't know this, but Justin Bieber (along with countless other now-famous singers) started by singing on Youtube videos and were found there by people who wanted to work with them. In this case, Rebecca Black just happened to get lucky when the Tosh.0 (a comedy show) blog website linked to her music video to make fun of it. Their blog likely gets millions of visitors per month, and so her video instantly spread across tons of other websites within days. So really, these ArkMusic people accomplished exactly what the parents wanted: to get exposure for their aspiring son/daughter. Quote:

If she really is the author of "Friday" then she has talent. Think about this: it was her first song and she is only 14 years old. I wonder how many of big time stars were able to write somethig like that at her age. So she could become a "real" artist in the future. The problem is there are people already profiting from her work and from the ridiculization she has gone through, which she is not able to see now. The other problem is that she chose a music style known for the many sudden stars that can't live by the hype they have enjoyed? That music style has a new king, queen, prince and princess every month. But probably in the future she can polish her talent and become a very good artist. |

I like to think of Rebecca Black somewhat like Jersey Shore: so bad, it's good. At least, that's the only way I can imagine them garnering any sort of success. For my own tastes, they're both so bad that they're not worth my time. It's a sign of the times I suppose. People love a train wreck. There's nothing admirable about a bunch of mid-twenties Italians yelling and screaming for an hour but Jersey Shore is insanely popular. Will RB's new song be popular? Unless it's unapologetically awful, I doubt it. Mediocre won't cut it. It either has to be really, really bad or pretty good. |

It doesn't really matter where this thread is, put it wherever you wish, but I can't say I consider a 13 year old girl's silly vanity-project video on YouTube to be relevant to World Affairs, even if it was popular for awhile. Call me when her next dumb song inspires a religion or political movement.
