without being specific of naming organizations...(I would use Charity Navigator - America's Largest Charity Evaluator | Home ) to pick my favs.... ...personally, I like any organization that helps children. Children are defenseless and they cannot help that they were born into families of abuse, neglect and other ills. I prefer US charities that focus on US problems. Children are our future and we must do everything in our power to help them, whether it is issues of literacy, food aid or just make them laugh. Last edited by Andras; 07-09-2011 at 03:46 PM. |

That charity site Steve mentioned in a recent blog, the one that indexes budding entrepreneurs and allows you to give them loans is a good one. I'd also donate to ecological preservation funds as the balance of the natural world is so vitally important to all living things. Organizations that have the preservation of all flora and fauna as their main goal are always worth donating to. There's entirely too much pain and suffering occurring in various African countries so any reputable charity that offered good education, food and water or even better, things like drilled wells and wind farms with no strings attached would be good options. If you're a Buddhist, sponsoring a monk is a good charitable option. Actually considering that monastic traditions tend to foster the development of complete selfless service in their adherents, donating to monastics of any religious tradition would be a good option. Donating to schools is always a good option, so long as you can be assured the money goes toward improving education in an effective and positive way. |

I'm going with mosquito nets and water aid for now. £100/month with a view to getting it up to 10% of disposable income after I've reached my next financial target. Present Aid | 5 mosquito nets > Life Savers WaterAid - water and sanitation for all - UK site |

Work associations that have the capacity for outreach programs that will recruit marginalized populations into higher paying jobs as the focus again is on giving people their own financial independence and agency as opposed to dependency on aid. Your local unions. *ducks out of thread* |

I wouldn't donate a penny to half of these so called Non-profit organizations. I'll give you an example. People donate to the Salvation Army...their clothes, furniture etc and get paper work for tax purposes..Big-Whoop...The clothes you donated do not go to most that need it and neither do the furnitures. They are sold throughout Salvation Army stores for people to buy. Instead of giving to charities or some organization that wants to build pipelines for some 3rd world country, take a look around the corner. There are millions of homeless-kids and adults who could benefit. Go to a local shelter that you know will distribute your canned goods, clothes etc.. to actual ppl that need it. Not some kid you saw on TV..(yeah one the guy with the beard). I'm sympathetic to those kids in other parts of the world but how can you walk like you didn't notice that homeless person but quick to give even when you don't know where your money really goes or who profits from it. |
