Thumbs down China executes a 21 year old for killing a hit and run victim

Well, I was really shocked reading this news....I mean, Iam not trying to justify his actions but this punishment seemed extremely harsh for me.... maybe a life sentence would have been appropriate.

Stabbing a woman to death because you're afraid she'll sue you after you hit her with a car seems pretty terrible.

Intentionally murdering someone is a pretty horrific crime. It's more surprising to me that people would consider the death penalty too harsh for murder, unless they were against the death penalty in general.

How is this punishment harsh? If you have the death penalty this is exactly the cases it should be used for.

Chinese government officials wouldn't get this kind of penalty for accidentally crushing someone with a tank.

um, actually Iam not against death penalty. In India, death penalty is given only to people who have "rarest of rare" cases.I wouldn't be starting a thread like this if another 21 year old killed 56 people in one day.Maybe he could have got a chance to correct himself for that terrible crime.

I think the death penalty should be reserved for entertainment purposes only. Otherwise people may begin to take it far to seriously.

I usually do not support most of the things Chinese government does. But in this case, it's equivalent to hanging or electric chair.

If you want to discuss the pros and cons of death penalty that's a separate issue.

The whole business with waiting for a court to sentence a person to death instead of killing him directly is so 20th century...

Sounds like he was sentenced: "But that was not considered grounds for leniency when he was tried by Xian's Intermediate People's Court, which convicted and sentenced him to death on 22 April."

I see no value added to justice from this death. It seems more like a show and a lessons judges wanted to teach rich family kids.

A person who confesses voluntarily should NEVER be sentenced to death penalty. This sounds just inhuman to me.

While I believe his committing a brutal murder for purely selfish reasons warrants the death penalty, it makes sense that there should be some leniency for voluntarily turning himself in. Otherwise, there is no incentive for anyone to turn themselves in, and more crimes will go unsolved and unpunished.

Yes. China is indeed a backward country.

The guy stabbed a woman to death right after running her over.
There is nothing harsh about this.

Err well... I thought at first that he was sentenced to death for accidentally killing someone, and I thought that was harsh. But he didn't. He deliberately and cold bloodedly murdered her!

It seems a fair enough punishment.

I don't think the death penalty should EVER be used when there is even the SLIGHTEST smidgen of doubt, but in this case he did it, so even though the penalty was harsh, he took a life and now his own is over as a result.

If this had happened in any of the other democratic countries that have death penalty, what would be the result?

I think, though someone please correct me if I'm wrong, that in America the death penalty would be on the table, but up to the judge after he had been proven guilty. (The other option likely being life in prison). It might depend on whether something like this is counted as or determined to be premeditated or a crime of passion.

Agreed. The judicial process itself will be different for every country. From the news link, it seems they did try him in a court and it was the court's ruling to award death penalty. I do not have any knowledge about the judicial process in China, but on the face of it there seems to be nothing illegal about it. They followed a judicial system and acted according to it.

I do not support most of the things that happen in China but in this case I think we are discussing it mainly because it happened in China.
