I'm becoming increasingly agitated at seeing the status of our world. I live in the US, and I want to live a happy, fulfilling life. Unfortunately my dreams are interrupted by things all over the news. Here's what I've been seeing lately... China, a nation of over a billion people is gaining power. Under normal circumstances, I would applaud them on their success. The only problem is that the leaders are extremely communist and keep their people in a police state that censors their free speech. You can't have something like this gain influence in the world. Religion is tearing apart the entire world.. Everyone believes they are right no matter what, because it's "The word of God" no matter who you ask, they're always right. These people are killing each other and basing major social decisions off of religious dogma that is often completely irrational. They believe their gods will solve all the problems, so they sit around and do nothing. These people are completely irrational and it's getting to a point where it's starting to affect my life. This doesn't make me very happy. This world needs real change! Not a bunch of idiots squabbling over power. Why the hell is it so hard for people to be able to tolerate each others beliefs. Why the hell do we halt stem cell research when it has the potential to save millions of lives in the long run ?? The only way forward is science! Nazi Germany was able to produce immense quantities of material out of just a tiny little country because science was so deeply into their culture in WWII. With science, we can end world hunger! We can get to the point where we never have to compete for natural resources ever again. So why not do it ?? Why does this have to be so hard ? If anyone can connect with my mad ravings at all, please share your opinion |

Your definitely on to something. I've recently developed a new appreciation for nature. At least in nature there's a reason to kill. You may not believe in evolution like I do, but we need to evolve past war. People don't realize the infinite potential for progress we have, if people were capable of abstract thinking, we could live in a phenomenally beautiful place

I agree with you, the state of the world is miserable, but I also think that focusing on politics and having a "global affairs" kind of mindset is part of the problem, even if it seems like more people being interested in global affairs is a good thing*. The root of the problem is and always will be our nature as humans and our current level of consciousness. *I say that about politics because I think it's a terrible thing when people become too interested in politics, because usually it's the wrong people. Reason being because stupid people develop interests in politics too. That includes the religious fundamentalists you mentioned. A shining example would be your country's own Sarah Palin who is an utter and complete moron who should never have been allowed near a position of power, responsibility or authority in any sort of hierarchy, let alone go anywhere near the seat of power in the worlds most powerful country. More stupid people in politics is not what we need, especially since stupid people are generally quite passionate; the wrong kind of passionate. Germany = tiny??? Since when? Largest European country tiny, or is there some other metric I'm missing? |

Honestly, I see resources as way more of an issue than religion. People may scowl at each other or even stay completely separate from others over religion, but only a few kill unless there's something else going on. Although there's a problem when one of those few ends up with an army at his disposal. I'm not religious in the traditional sense (some would call me agnostic, other pantheist, others animist), so this isn't any kind of defense. There are other problems I see with religion, however, if I'm in Group A and Group B lives with their religion without threatening me or those I love, there's no reason religion has to go. Also, what up's with the Nazi reference? They were efficient cause they were totalitarian with a major brainwashing program in place, not cause they "were scientists". It's well observed that totalitarianism is far more efficient than any sort of democracy or attempt at such. Less people making decisions, they get made faster. No conflicting interests being listened to? Ruthlessness is facilitated. Quote:

Buuut, if you wanted to do an interesting exercise, write out a positive sentence for every negative sentence, one that carries as much weight. There IS enough positives in the world that you can do this.

Still, it's up to the individual to choose to be a part of the solution or not. Just bitchin' about how messed up the world is doesn't really do much to help it. Things have been like this for a long time, you're speaking as though it is something new that everything is wrong! (I'm addressing the OP here supertom, not you.) Not watching the news is a good place to start. Filling yourself up with fear and getting depressed helps nobody! Last edited by elucidate; 02-05-2011 at 05:51 AM.

I don't see anything 'wrong' with the world at hand. It's the way it is and the way it is supposed to be. Humans are here, and criticizing us for just being on the planet is like criticizing yourself for living -- the exact thing, actually. We're here because the universe, source, whatever you believe in has put us here, and we maybe damaging the Earth or whatever things we find as 'wrong', but that's because we are human. We make mistakes and we are operation on a set of beliefs that help us. |

Science WILL NOT cure hunger...proper distribution of food and not using food as a weapon will be the cure....Without the technological "advances" we could still feed the world on what we produce...Keep your "science" out of my food thank you very much As for the idea of for every negative there is a positive.. I agree 100%..I have been reading quite a bit lately about the atrocities that the Turks perpetrated on my grandfathers generation in 1915 and all I can say about it is that it makes me so grateful that I am here at all.. I have no axe to grind with the Turks and I realize that humanity is two sides of the same coin.. we are brutal and uncaring and unfeeling, yet at the same time are full of love and compassionate..... yes there is unrest and disturbance in the world, and there is beauty all around you just have to look for it..Personally I can find it in the most mundane places. a blade of grass, the wrinkles on someones face, A plate of food, even in the mess of a big pile of greasy pots and pans in a kitchen.. Its everywhere... |

Your take on science is almost religious. Science is the salvation. Science will save us all. All worship and obey science. Your science religion is better than every other religion and has all the answers. You might even be able to get tax exempt status. I agree with Elucidate, stop watching the news. You will be much happier. If you want things to change then stop watching the news and get out there and change things. Then you will be on the news. |

| Me, too. Fortunately, I am in charge of my state; my happiness and fulfillment is not at the effect of circumstances. Quote:

Science is a very useful tool, it's brought us great understanding and technology. It is only a tool... War, intolerance and poverty are social issues. It's our ethics and culture that must change, how we behave toward the world and each other. Your post implies an interesting question OP, what is the way forward? What is the future of humanity? At the moment we still act like a bunch of tribes all fighting over the best stuff. It's going to take a pretty big shift to change that. |

| Yes. Long before humans, there were at least two mass extinctions, and it took millions of years to recover. I don't think we are a failed experiment, because I don't think the experiment is over yet.

| Hi everyone. First post here. I just had to comment on this. It was recently pointed out to me that the legal definition of mayhem is the removal of another person's members (hand, leg, eye, etc). Your post is pretty interesting in this context. |
