I am absolutely sure it is reading the newspapers. They are so full of negative things that I feel depressed even before my first cup of coffee. I dunno if I ought to have posted this here in the "World Affairs" section, but I feel this is very much a "world affair." Cheers!

Wake up, say aloud good morning and then sit quietly. No newspaper, it is not my business. I read only philosophy section, sacred space and business news. Business news are never negative. Full of strategy and new articles. I never turn on. It's idiot box for me. |

Absolutely. The last thing I want to 'feel' at the beginning of a new day(With new possibilities etc) is how someone's chain was snatched or how a factory building collapsed with many workers in it or how a corrupt politician molested the daughter of a poor farmer. The worst part is, even if I don't read the newspaper myself, my Father briefs me up with the dramatised versions of all the stories so as to 'warn' me of the dangers and injustice 'out there' so I'll be cautious. |

I never read the newspaper, and I don't need to. I have my supervisor at work to dump all the misery of the world on me the first thing I get there. If I show any sign of being happy or having fun she will put a stop to that quick smart and tell me about the latest gruesome murder. She's so...nice! |

Listen to morning radio shows. Those people are so loud and and negative and ignorant. In the past when I've been forced to hear them all I can think is, gah how many Americans are listening to this CRAP in the mornings? I wonder hoe many of nations problems would be solved if everyone just stopped listening to this stuff." I think morning pseudo news talk shows are pretty bad too. Like The Today Show or Good Morning America. If what you do in the morning sets the tone for the rest of your day...I mean, come on people!

Meditating and eating something good would probably be better in the long run. It's not the end of the world if you don't know what's going on, and it's not like knowing what's going on will change anything, it just means you will be more depressed, which changes nothing. It doesn't help those people who got murdered, or their families, it doesn't help the financial crises of the week and it doesn't change the fact that there are natural disasters happening...all it does is make people feel helpless and powerless to stop it all...if they are sensitive. |

I am certainly careful about sources. I will read the WSJ front page and their Life & Style section. Their front page in particular is a very dry presentation, and not overly negative - today's above-the-fold articles are: - the improving home afordability in the US - evidence Toyotas didn't have faulty electronics causing "unintended acceleration" - a proposed tax increase from Obama - a medical advance for breast cancer treatment Arguably 3 of 4 are positive. They have a nice habit of moving long-running and somewhat negative stories (like Egypt) to their own sections too, which is handy. Life & Style of course is just pure fluff. But fun and well written fluff. |
