By making a vocal version, she is remixing, and remixing is illegal. So they apologized because it is ridiculous, but it remains illegal. I made my own remix version of 2001 space odyssey theme, and if I broadcasted it I might need to ask for permission from the studios that own the rights. By singing in the open, she is technically broadcasting. Last edited by ar81; 11-01-2009 at 08:18 AM. |

The Performance Rights laws were brought in only a few years ago. I remember at the time people complaining because it meant it would now be illegal for the cliental of a pub gathered round a piano and have an impromptu sing song if the pub didn't have a licence. Didn't think it would go so far as to attempt to prosecute someone for singing to themselves as they did their work though! |

What kind of a law is this? Is this what the world has come to? Are people that protective of their music and intellectual property they would fine someone for singing their songs in public? Good thing this ended well.

This is a UK law: Who needs a PRS Music Licence? • Any location or premises where music is played and can be heard by the public. • Any premises outside the home, from clubs to concert halls, from discos to dentists’ waiting rooms, and from trains to take always. • Usually, the proprietor/manager of the premises is responsible for obtaining a PRS Music Licence. Is a PRS Music Licence required by law? Yes. |
