Default h1n1 a national emergency?

What the heck?

Are people that scared of their own shadow now they've allowed the drug companies to own them by a simple quote of statistics? I know a couple of kids who've gotten the h1n1 (they're alive and well too). I don't think we should underestimate the seriousness of any disease as any can kill you. But why would people believe this is any more serious than the common flu? I understand that the govt agencies do it cuz they've nothing better to do with the money they've got.........

I think that's the answer. If we think about it, marketer Obama gets some more attention by being the one to declare it a "national emergency" and his dear government has one more excuse to increase its size, which is what all governments love and do best.

Let's count how many are going to end up in body bags voluntarily.

Mainly for three reasons:
1) The probably inflated numbers for deaths in Mexico right after the first outbreak.
2) The theoretical explanation of one of my professors:
While seasonal flu changes every year there's still the assumption that your immune system doesn't have to start at zero to protect you against the seasonal flu.
Swine flu is on the other hand something that doesn't happened in the last ten years and therefore our immune system has to start at zero.
3) It's similarity to the Spanish flu that killed ~20 million

That said I won't vaccinate myself.

Talking about this in terms of “bad news” or “bad judgment by business leaders” seems archaic. It’s like describing World War One as “a serious diplomatic concern.”

Personally I don't do the conspiracy theory drama (that's just yet another aspect of being scared of one's own shadow) so count me out on that one. I'm not afraid the govt is going to implant a micro chip in me or whatever other b/s people want to cook up to make themselves feel frightened enough for the day. For some people I think it must be the only way to feel alive.

I actually see it as the other way around. The govt gives it's people what the people want, not the other way around. People want to be scared. Give them the scare-shot and you're good to go. It's how the media works.

Mexico D.F. is a very crowded city with several million people with a health system that stinks. Compared to the population of the city, the disease killed only a few people.

To answer your question about the h1n1 flu: it spreads very easily and it's been especially hard on kids/teens. People get upset when they see kids dying. Here in Maryland another teen (18 yr old health male) just died from it.

It was declared an "emergency" to speed up access to healthcare. Don't forget the US has limited or no access to healthcare for some segments of the population. Even with good insurance and $$$, some people can't get what they need. I think anything they need to do to speed up healthcare is a good thing.

The country is bankrupt and tangled in multiple wars, but don't worry about that.

A mild flu is going around, and it is a national emergency.

Must be Opposite Day! Forever!!

I understand that. But I'd like to see the number of people (teens included) who died that week from the regular flu.
Of course nobody really dies from flu, they die because pre-existing conditions they have make it hard for them to fight a flu infection. I'm not saying people shouldn't get upset when somebody dies from whatever disease. But does that mean we declare every disease an Emergency? I'm waiting till we can declare obesity an emergency. Now there's a real emergency if you ask me.....

My 17 yo daughter just got over h1n1. It was a milder case than when I got the seasonal flu a few years back. That said, nobody knew in the beginning and we still don't know now if h1n1 is going to mutate into something much more deadly. I figure the govt fears being caught unprepared ala Katrina more that anything else.
