Default 15 year old girl to sail solo around the world

A 15 year old Australian woman (I guess when someone starts on something that big they deserve to be called young woman and not girl) will attempt to be the youngest person to sail solo, unassisted, non-stop around the world.

Jessica Watson - Youngest Around the World Sailing Attempt

Everywhere I've seen this piece of news, comments are usually along the lines of "what are her parents thinking?!"
I, on the opposite, feel that it's an amazing example of someone following their dream, no matter how unusual or how young they are.
A few generations ago, 15 year olds were considered adult enough to work for a living, serve in the army or found a family. Today the "child" zone extends well after puberty has ended. I am glad there are young people to show that one can be young AND responsible and in charge of their lives.

That's pretty amazing, though it worries me.

I watched a really crazy movie recently, Deep Water, that was about a relatively inexperienced (in sailing) engineer who entered a solo world race. I don't want to spoil it, but it turned out to be a hugely depressing story.

There were only 9 sailors in the race (the other 8 were all pros). There was only one finisher. The rest essentially wrecked, went mad, or quit.

I am with you. I think it's great. At 15 I was the strongest I have ever been, and the most positive, and the most trusting in the Universe. It's a great time to do it. Although, I did learn a few tricks after that about sailing...

It sounds like a great growth experience!

You guys might find this link interesting: Zac Sunderland

I've been following Zac for quite awhile now via his blog. It sounds like quite the expedition to solo sail the world!
