Does anyone think the West really screwed up here? 18 years ago; Berlin wall and USSR collapses. The West and its media goes hurray "The whole world can be happy and be friends. We, the good guys have prevailed!" Little do they know that the military industrial complex don't want a happy world. ...So 18 years later, the world still has wars, poverty and injustice is on the rise. Russia has been humiliated by the West instead of being embraced and now they're pissed off. So now fervor for nationalism is rising the like of which has not been seen since the Cold War and Germany 1936. All the while China is looking and saying, "Oh ****. If we become a democracy we will most likely become the West's slave. We better not make that mistake." Not to mention the recent Free-Tibet fever and the patronization of the Chinese people by the West and it's media has made them rally around the communist party making it even more stronger. |

The government probably realizes that economic reform must come before any political reform. What is surprising to me is that America hasn't been as loud about the Tibet Free movement and quite supporting of China during the Olympics. Most of the dissent came from Europe. China needs us, as much as we need them. That relationship won't be going anywhere anytime soon. I think it is obvious by China's shift in the last 12-20 years that they want to include themselves in the worlds political scene. You cannot survive as a nation by yourself anymore, China understands this and has acted accordingly. |

The Culture Revolution was an event created by really tyrannical leaders and China has now better leaders. You don't create a free society over one or two decades. Those things need time. Chinas leaders want to follow Singapores model as far as corruption goes and fight it. If you see corruption as one of the main challenges of China, they are working on fixing that challenge. Quote:
China wanted to export more than they import and that plan worked for them. There some people in the US who don't like that fact, but since the US needs Chinas money the relationship continues. Quote:
