Let do a little comparison: If it came down to bailing out failing industries...

Would it be a good idea to bail out soda companies?

Would it be a good idea to bail out Tobacco companies?

Would it be a good idea to bail out alcohol companies?

Would it be a good idea to bail out the fast food industry?

Would it be a good idea to bail out __________________?

What is the benefit to bailing out the Automotive industry... Who stands to benefit/profit from this bail out?

It's not like people stopped buying cars because of the recession. If you need a car, you need a car.
If you don't get a credit you can't buy the car, whether you need a car or doesn't need a car.
In addition people often buy new cars because they don't like their old car anymore while the car still functions.
People also normally don't buy the smallest/cheapest car possible that brings them from A to B.

Talking about this in terms of “bad news” or “bad judgment by business leaders” seems archaic. It’s like describing World War One as “a serious diplomatic concern.”
Bruce Sterling about the financial crisis.
