I keep hearing all the stuff about banks and the crisis lately, but being a layman in economic theory I have no clue what the hell is going on.

Can anyone recommend a good book on banks that would teach a newbie like me what is their role in the economy and why they are so very important.

Money, whence it came and where it went by J.K.Galbraith is a very good read. His book on the Wall Street Crash is worth a look at too. They are a bit US centric but other than that really good.
