Default Looking for knowledge in all the wrong places

Looking for knowledge in all the wrong places

“Looking for Love in all the Wrong Places” is the name of a movie that came out long ago. It was the story of a woman who thought she could find love in the bars and night clubs of the city. It turned out to be a disaster for her.

Looking for knowledge in all the wrong places is equally problematic.

Internet discussion forums are great places to encounter new ideas that can arouse our curiosity and caring. These forums can raise our consciousness and from that consciousness we can be motivated to discover knowledge and perhaps understanding.

Internet discussion forums are the wrong places for acquiring knowledge. The best approach for acquiring knowledge is from books or perhaps from Google when our search is more superficial. When we wish to acquire knowledge we need to search for the best thinkers available to us; these best thinkers fill the shelves of our libraries and we can access them at little or no monetary cost. Our only investment need be time, energy, curiosity, and caring.

I have a “Friends of the Library” card from a local college library. For a yearly fee of $25 I have access to a great lending library.

Social osmosis will provide us little beyond infotainment.

Acquiring knowledge and understanding is like constructing a papier-mâché statue. It is an incremental process of slowly adding and subtracting small bits to a structure that takes form slowly as we piece together what is truth for us.

When we were in school our teacher guided our every move but when our schooling is over we must seek out the great minds of history as our guide.

Are you looking for knowledge in all the wrong places? What are some other places where we are deluded into thinking that we can find meaningful knowledge?

I guess it depends on the type of knowledge you're looking for. If you want to learn about the experiences of others and how they handle their problems forums are a great place to gain knowledge. If you're working on your doctorate in philosophy, there are better places.

There is much to be gained in sharing your experiences and what you've learned from them with others. At the very least you learn that you're not alone, or much different or out in left field. The human experience is one we can all share and learn from and forums are a great place to do that.

p.s. You also learn about great sites that do offer more in the way of 'knowledge'.

I see your point. Yes it is amazing how much knowledge you can ind in books. I think of the movie "Seven" when Morgan Freeman's character is visiting the library after hours to research. The security guard lets him in. As he goes to look for books he sees the janitors and sercurity guards playing poker. Morgan's character says all the world of knowledge at your finger tips and what do you do you play poker. Sometimes I think it would be an good job to be night security for a library, I could get so much reading in. I would take a cut in pay for that job. And yes the power of the library card is great. I have just finished a book on the life of Bruce Lee thanks to my local library. If I am lazy for a small fee I can even have the library mail books to me. I read Steve's article on internet addiction and found that very useful. I think too many times on some forums people post or respond just to get their numbers of post jacked up. I admit I sometimes think maybe on these forums or other places online I will find my great teacher or guru. It could happen but all that surfing could be better spent on reading. My daughter is getting crabby at the moment so I need to end it here.

The key to discovering truth and knowledge in the world is to realize it's all around you. Every minute is a lesson. Every action. Every experience, good and bad. Every person. Every thought.

Books are great and I am a fan. But there is nothing like a fresh perspective from a stranger in an internet forum to put me on a new path I would have never discovered on my own.

My #1 rule for finding meaningful knowledge:

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

Jennifer

The point of a forum is to discuss ideas. You can talk to your book but it won't listen and give you feedback.

The other thing that a forum like this provides is different perspectives. Perspectives alone are no knowledge but they can be sometimes a good starting point.

Talking about this in terms of “bad news” or “bad judgment by business leaders” seems archaic. It’s like describing World War One as “a serious diplomatic concern.”
Bruce Sterling about the financial crisis.

Looking for love in all the wrong places is the name of a song from the soundtrack of the movie Urban Cowboy that came out in the '80s.

The movie you describe sounds like Looking For Mr. Goodbar, from around the same time period. Both great movies, by the way

You are correct. I think I must have had a senior moment and confused a song title with a movie. Thanks for the correction.
