OK this isn't a new thing, but in the UK the ole' Red brick universities, Oxbridge, LSE, Leeds, Nottinham etc...etc... have sort of released a low-key list of A-Levels that they don't particularly like... Amongst these are Business studies, ICT, Sociology, English Language, Economics, Law etc...etc... They say that these are less academically proficient than say Physics, English Lit, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology etc...etc... I suppose I just wanted to know what people thought about this. Should university remain an Academic Oasis, or should it branch out to everyone. You see one argument is that it kind of shoves Middl Class and below kids out of the picture, favouring the privately taught, upper class echelon, but that nots a fair point, because Leeds (where I want to go) is well within mine, and many others academic reach... so...discuss EDIT: I just noticed there is a politics and education forum, can I have this post moved there please, oh great and powerful Mods! A-levels are qualifications you can work for betwen the ages of 16-18 (usually) these vary from the sciences, maths, english, to media studies, economics and business studies... the low-key part was reffering to the way it was kinda hushed into the academia circles online...trying to keep it away from the press. |

When universities filter qualifications for admission, if they're objectively at the same level (I don't exactly know what that'd look like with A-levels), the isn't the chance to bring forth different perspectives that may come from the middle and working classes. Even if it doesn't maintain the preexisting academic atmosphere, there is a better venue to explore a larger range of ideas.
