Default How To Start a Money Making Website in Ten Days

Hey all,

Apparently, with the "interweb revolution," it is now possible to make money from home! What you say?? Yes!

So, this thread will be dedicated to the ten day development of a passive income generating website.

Should be interesting.

Stay tuned..

To start: We'll need an idea, a domain name, and some hosting space.

I had the idea about an hour ago and bought the domain name. I've had the hosting space for a while.

Idea: Humor site posting mean and funny emails online.
Domains: meanmails.com, meanmails.net, meanmails.org (all registered an hour ago.)
Hosting space: Dedicated server by 1and1.com.

Step one: Build site
Step two: Get funny / mean emails
Step three: Profit!

Right now you guys are going to help me with step two.

If you have ANY mean / funny / rude / outlandish or crazy e-mails that would be entertaining for the site send them to me! puredemo@yahoo.com!

Meanwhile, I'll build the site.

1. Download wordpress. Version 2.2.2 will be our weapon of choice.

2. Setup the mysql database and input the information into the wordpress config file.

3. Upload.

4. Re-point the domain.

And, the first version of the site will done.

The files are uploaded:

[14:58:43] 226 Transfer complete
[14:58:43] Transfer successful.

Still waiting for the new MySql database to finish creating.

I finished uploading the site before the server could even finish creating a new MySql database. Pretty leet, huh?

The MySql database finished creating, but the domain might take up two 24 hours to display full functionality in cpanel. This includes repointing it to the new files.

I'll be sitting here, hitting refresh.

Alright, the domains finally fully registered.

I repointed meanmails.com and meanmails.net over to the new wordpress install.

Process Finished
Your changes have been saved.

Changes made to your domain's destination will be available in about 10 minutes and when activating FrontPage the changes will be available in about 3 hours if not sooner.

Modified Domains
meanmails.com
meanmails.net

Here's a screenshot of the default wordpress install.

Next up, some changes on wordpress.

1. Change the administrative login folder. The last thing you want on a high traffic site are people trying to dictionary attack your admin panel.

2. Switch to a theme that is geared towards heavy adsense insertion.

3. Make the site fun. Animated graphics etc.

4. Disable comments. Usually "web 2.0" (cough) sites are all about comments, but it has become my personal belief that user interaction is over rated. Just look at the comments on any youtube video to exemplify what I mean. The goal here is to create an awesome "final product," and lame comments detract from that.

Starting on those changes now..

I'm definitely leaning towards this SEO theme for step two.

I'm done with steps one and two. I'm skipping three for now, because I'm looking at the site, and its cracking me up already, even without any graphics.

I may add more later, but this is fine for now.

Had dinner.

Updated the footer and the sidebar.

Closed comments.

Signed up for Google Adsense, awaiting approval on that.

Posted the first Mean Mail. Its not as mean as I would like, but it'll do.

I changed the site format so it displays each piece of mean mail with an icon first, then when you click on the icon a nice, animated, centered, gallery style view displays the letter in its full radiance. This is using litebox.

I added some new categories.

I'm planning on posting the second mean mail tomorrow morning. Got some killer ones from my boss.

I went to google's "webmasters tools" site and verified that I am, indeed, the site's owner by adding a meta tag into my header.php.

You've successfully verified Mean Mails.

Tracking code installed. Waiting for Data.

I downloaded and installed Google Sitemap Generator 3 Beta.
Your sitemap was last built on August 23, 2007 3:54 am.
Your sitemap (zipped) was last built on August 23, 2007 3:54 am.
Google was successfully notified about changes.
Ask.com was successfully notified about changes.
The building process took about 0.56 seconds to complete and used 6.08 MB of memory.
If you changed something on your server or blog, you should rebuild the sitemap manually.

I went back to google webmaster tools and added my sitemap to it.

You have added a Sitemap to Mean Mails. Reports may take several hours to update. Thank you for your patience!

@skinnyninja - Sure, thanks. I think the site will end up being pretty rad.

I updated the stylesheet on the theme to match the adsense font better, though it could still use some tweaking.

I also adjusted a lot of the colors on adsense to match the theme colors.

Everything is looking pretty well integrated now.

I opted into Google's advanced image search. I'm not quite sure what that is, but I assume it'll bring more traffic.

I added a "submit" page that includes a basic licensing agreement.

I also decided to accept mean voice mails.

I don't have safari, so I checked how the site looks in safari over at BrowsrCamp.

Looks pretty good. Here's a screenshot.

My life is such that I have never received, nor sent, any mean mails. Before this, I didn't regret that. Now I'm questioning my priorities. Perhaps I should get involved in an overly dramatic relationship just to feed your site.
