Default Tracking birthdays with GMail/GCal

Hey all. Switched off Outlook a few months ago to GMail/Google Calendar and really loving it. However, one thing I miss is the ability to add a birthday to a contact and have a reminder pop up on my calendar so I can send them a quick e-mail or give them a call. Google's Contacts feature doesn't provide this. I was wondering if anyone here has a good solution for this. Ideally I don't want to sign up for another web service just to track this. Any suggestions?

Wouldn't you just create a birthday as a regular event?

There is a small box that says "options" under your event creation box that will allow you to set advanced reminders.

That's an option but ideally I want to be able to link a birthday to a contact. That way if I transfer contacts later the birthday information will be retained with the contact.
