Well, I decided to redesign my site and give wordpress a try. I want to keep a structure similar to what my current site looks like, with a list of categories, where each category page has a list of title pages and each page containing the specific list. (It’s kind of hard to explain, but you can probably understand it better if you visit my site (in sig) and click on a topic link to see what I mean). I don’t want to use wordpress as a blog, just for my lists I write. I’m not sure how to set this structure up in wordpress. Do I want to post my lists as “posts” or “pages”? Should I create new pages just for the categories (like my "Advice Lists" page in my current site)? I already looked at different tutorials, but couldn’t find anything as close to what I am looking for. I also put two lists already into wordpress form (here is the current link for them: Toptenlisted.com » Advice ), but they are both on the same page as “posts”, I want them to have their own page, but am confused as how to go about it. I’d appreciate any assistance from people already familiar with how wordpress works, or if you know where I could look, etc. Thanks

You should delete this post: Hello world! | Toptenlisted.com Also, your site is down. You deleted it or something? And you should get rid of the subdirectory you put the wordpress folder in. Make the url be "http://www.toptenlisted.com/wordpress/" or just "http://www.toptenlisted.com/" when/if you decide to convert the rest of your site to wordpress. To edit wordpress, you'll need to know some php and html. You'll probably need css too and maybe javascript depending on what you're trying to do... If you're trying to do something complicated, you'll need sql. ...Unless you can find a plugin. Not too sure what you're trying to do(I found a cache on Google and the layout there has the same "flow" as your wordpress one)... |

Right now my biggest concern is what you mentioned, trying to figure out how to edit the URL's and delete the "wordpress" folders in the pathname (Or at least hide it somehow). PS I know it has something to do with the .htaccess file, I'm just unsure of the code

Just move all of the files in the wordpress directory to your website's root directory, and you'll be able to run it from there... It won't break anything since web apps don't usually care where they are on the filesystem. |

I’m really having problems with this TDOMF plugin (it allows anybody to register and create posts or pages on the blog) so if anybody else is familiar with it, here are my questions (This plugin is going to be a central theme to my site, so I can’t just deactivate it): It says that there “MUST be a default author who must not have publish or edit abilities”. How do I make so I (as the administrator) have complete control (it won’t let the admin be selected as a default author)? Then, I tried to create a few new posts (in my administrator dashboard profile) and it wouldn’t even allow me to be the author of my own posts, “somebody else” has to be selected. I don’t want to create a new user just to make my posts and pages under “his” name. it’s really ironic (and frustrating) that this “default author” I select is given ownership over my posts I create. If anyone needs more details, I’d be happy to tell you more. PS I’ve already tried posting in the wordpress forums, and haven’t gotten any help over there.

I am not familiar with this plugin, but if anyone can make posts with it, sounds like not having the admin user assigned to it is a good security measure.

Or am I suppose to unplug it every time I want to create and manage posts and pages? Because that would be a hassle not only for me, but users that register to my site.

I'm not very familar with wordpress, but from the sound if it posts would be something that's listed in the blog section, and pages would be things like "about us". When you're moving a web application to a new address (whether it's a different directory or a different server) there's usually not too much work involved, but most of them want to have some idea of the address they're at so they can make links to it. There's probably an option in the configuration file you'll have to change to keep things working. |
