Default Off Line Journal Software?

I would like to keep a journal, but I don't feel the need to broadcast my thoughts to the world. I do know that some online Journals allow you to restrict access to just yourself, but I do not want my diary on somebody else's machine.

Is there any offline journaling software out there. Something that would be a bit more convenient for keeping and organizing a diary then just typing notes in a text file?

Will it run on linux/

While it definitely won't run in Linux, I use Microsoft OneNote for this.

I have The Journal, by DavidRM software, which I believe Steve Pavlina uses as well. It's designed specifically for the purpose you have in mind (although it also has some features for integrating with a blog, etc., that you might not care about), so I'd say it beats your benchmark of "better than a text file".

It has a section organized for daily entries, and sections for specialized topics / outlining, it's password protected (and has optional "high security" features), and also has some optional "writing prompts" if you want a more structured journaling experience.

It's Windows software though, I don't know much about Linux journaling software.

Cron, if you use KDE, why don't you try Kontact. It has Journal, Notes, Calendar (which you were asking for in your other thread), etc and some kind of synchronization, which I admit I haven't tried.

I don't know how it compares to "The Journal", but I've just started using NeoJournal Beta, and it seems quite good. It's free and open source, it attributes both dates and categories against entries, it allows basic text formatting (bold, bullets etc.), you can copy-paste graphics into it, and it's password-protectable.

SourceForge.net: NeoJournal - The New Journal

EDIT: The Binary is for Windows, but it's written in C# so it may well compile under Mono.

LOL! I think you meant that for my other thread. I used to use the KDE before I started using Ubuntu. I can install Kontact anyway and give it a try.

Hey!

I use Kubuntu as an operating system (Kubuntu ROCKS), and Kontact for my journaling, mail, notes, agenda, todo's etc.

It's a very good application for that kind of stuff.
