Default what graphics software do you recommend?

What do you guys use to tweak pictures and graphics for your web pages? Are there any free ones out there that you've had good experiences with? (GIMP?) Let me know.

PS: I'm trying to make a header graphic for my blog (taking a scanned photograph and re-size it to the template) any advice on that would be helpful. I'm hopeless with this techie stuff

I like the GIMP, because it is free and has a lot of features, but it is a little tricky to use. I also like Paint Shop Pro because it also has a lot of features, but I think its easier to learn and be productive with.

I would recommend trying both the GIMP and Paint Shop Pro, and if you don't like the GIMP, I think buying Paint Shop Pro is a good way to go.

Ultimate Paint: JTL Ultimate Paint Image Editor Homepage

It's buggy and getting old.. but almost exactly like Amiga's Deluxe Paint. So I muddle along with it.

I use Adobe Photoshop everyday, but its expensive (hundreds of $) and if you only need to do a simple task then it is not worth it.

If you are running Windows, I hear Paint.NET (Paint.NET - Free Photo Editing Software for Windows) is very very good. Apparently its a "supercharged MS Paint" and very easy to use.

Of course the free software, The GIMP, is good, but I find its interface a little hard to understand compared to Photoshop.

Mostly Photoshop, costs a hench but for serious stuff the only tool..

in Linux i will probably use WINE + Photoshop, GIMP is OK but not something i lust for although it's dirt cheap.. i.e. free

Take GIMP for starters, if you have some serious stuff to produce then transfer and hand out the money for Photoshop. BTW i saw some really powerful graphics in GIMP, on the second thought ... i could even use it professionally..

I've seen some people use Inkscape. Draw Freely. quite productively.
