What's happened to the forum?

Hi
I wasn't sure where to post this.

For a while now, every time I open a new window in this forum, it takes time to process.

What has happened to this forum?

Criseyde 10-13-2011 03:42 AM

Hi Martyn, I've moved the thread to the tech forum. I don't know what's going on though, the forum is fine on my end. Hopefully someone else will have better ideas.

I've had the site itself being inaccessible for like half a minute at a time on occasion, every couple of weeks or since the summer. And just now, it took a while to get here from Business & Financial!

Yup, that is a server load issue, and it's being worked on. I don't know what would cause the site to slow down all the time, though.

I thought that Steve mentioned that problem and had fixed it (?).
I hadn't noticed it for a while, until just now, when it took a long time to start -
(I wonder if I manifested it after reading your post (?!)).

However, the problem which is ongoing, is -
The site opens - I try to scroll down on the right -
It stops after a couple of seconds, and I have to wait a bit, and then it works all right.
I then scroll down and go into one of the discussion topics -
The same thing happens again - It scrolls all right for a second or so, then it won't work, and I have to wait a few seconds while it gathers itself together!
If instead, when I open a new window, I wait a bit, the scroll won’t work at all for a few seconds, then the egg timer appears, and then it works after a while.

It's slightly irritating, and happens every time I go into a new part of the discussion, or a post.

Also, no other forum does it!

When I get round to it, I'll check another computer to see if it does the same.

It's interesting if I'm the only one with this problem (??)

Martyn13 10-13-2011 04:27 PM

Sorry!
I shouldn't say it's slightly irritating.
It's actually teaching me to be more patient!

For some reason this forum does run slow . I use opera's speed dial Opera browser | Faster & safer internet | Free download I open many windows , I let this forum load as I am on other web sites. There is also a version of opera that runs on dream studio , Ubuntu Linux DistroWatch.com: Dream Studio desert rat

Martyn13 10-13-2011 05:41 PM

Would slowness cause the scrolling problem?

Criseyde 10-13-2011 06:35 PM

I don't know. It would be helpful if you could report back once you're able to check on another computer. Since nobody else is reporting this specific problem, I'm thinking it might for some reason be on your end. Your browser may not like one of the specific plugins on this site, or something.

Oh, here's an idea: have you tried loading the forum with scripts blocked?

Sbonn 10-13-2011 07:26 PM

This is my experience with the site taking time to load:

I have noticed the be friendly links on the left in the side bar to cause some issues for me. There are times I have to wait on those to load for the forum to finish loading. Since they rely on java scripts running offsite .. the forums are at the mercy of whether or not those offsite servers are running properly or are having connectivity issues... (FB, Twitter and Google +1 causes havoc with some of my clients websites on occasion where I have put in the social media buttons. ) I tend to watch the notification bar at the bottom left and it usually say who the culprit is of the social media links.

Other times it's a ISP issue ... ( Comcast specifically for me proves to be challenging where I live. )

Then finally, other times I just get a website not available page from my browser. When I get that I check to be sure other sites come up for me. If they do come up then I know it is specifically the forum server that is having issues either with itself or connectivity.

Martyn, what browser are you using? Midnite said that he's having the same problem in the latest version of Internet Explorer, but that it works fine in Firefox.

At what times do you have problem with loading pages of the forum? Which browser did you use?

Have you tried disabling scripts? Which version of Firefox do you use?

Maybe worth a try. I use Firefox 4.0.

I downloaded Internet Explorer 8.
I just checked my Mother's computer, and it is similar.
For some weird reason, I think mine is a bit worse.
On my Mother's computer, it takes about 5 seconds to process, every time a new page is loaded within the forum, after it has apparently loaded.
When first going to the forum, it seems to have become extraordinarily slow since I started this thread.

I wonder if there are issues with IE8, as I only downloaded it a few weeks ago - Can’t remember how long this forum problem has been going - Maybe 2 weeks.

Now I come to think of it, I have also had problems connecting to the internet in the last few weeks - which has never happened before - Wonder if IE8 is at fault (??).
No other forums have these symptoms though.
E.g. Randi's forum runs smoothly!

I don’t know if it is just slowness.
With other forums, pages occasionally take a few seconds to load, but on this forum, it looks to have loaded, but the scroller acts strange for a while until it settles.
Even though my Mother’s computer seems a little better than mine, the scroller still takes time to settle down, which is different from any other forums.

The problem I described is continuous - all the time.

No - I don't know how to do that!
