I have a website composed in ASP. See WorldChristianMinistries.us It was originally WorldChristianMinistries.org but a friend offered to take over the ministry when I decided to close it down, and he asked to have that url linked to his new website. So I allowed him to transfer that url to his new website and gave my old website a *.us url. I have not added to it in a year and have decided to close down the site. But before I do I want to archive all the stories I wrote for it (probably 200 or more). I could copy them one at a time and paste then into a Word or Pages document, and/or even convert them to a pdf. But that sounds tedious. My technician offered to copy the contents to a CD or DVD, but how could I read such files? He could only offer me a MicroSoft program that he said continues to foul up (anything else new?). And I use an iMac. (March 2010 with updates). I'm new to this website and don't know anything else about it. I got here through a search for "Read ASP files". The site asked me to post to a forum. I wanted to "post" not "reply" but saw no means to do so. So here I am. |

Hi jmlindner, I've moved your post to its own thread. If you want to start new threads, click on the "New Thread" button in the forum view; it will be right under the forum heading (Technology & Technical Skills). Sorry I don't have an answer to your question, hopefully someone else will!

First, is it classic ASP or ASP.NET? ASP and ASP.NET websites need to be hosted in IIS (Internet Information Services) which runs on Windows. You may want to search the internet for "host asp on mac" or "host asp.net on mac"... and see if you're lucky. |

Did you add the "stories" to the site via a web interface, eg. did you have to login to an admin panel and type the stories into a box? If so, they're likely stored in a database rather than files on the server. If they are in a database, ask your tech guy if he can export the info out to a text file or similar. It's going to be very very difficult for you to setup the server environment (IIS) needed to process the ASP scripts as well as output any of the old content.... especially on your Mac. If the stories are stored in their own individual .asp files, then you can just open them in a text editor (eg. TextEdit on your mac) to extract the content (in HTML format). |
