Now that my websites are starting to pay off my monthly expenses, I have more time to consider pursuing the idea I've been having: to build a search engine. What would be an appropriate name for a new search engine? What makes a name appropriate for such a tool? I have thought of eye.com, because we discover things with our eyes. I have sent an inquiry about the domain name, but I have not received a response. Can anyone else help me? Last edited by GrigoriySidelnikov; 09-15-2011 at 07:55 AM. |

Wow, you're really going to take on Google?? Then again, I guess you're Russian too (like its founder)! How about naming your search engine after some famous explorer? (Preferably one who didn't kill people.) Or a fictional detective like Sherlock Holmes or something. Maybe an animal, "bloodhound"...maybe an imperative, even, like "get it" or "find" (though the domains are probably already taken).... |

First of all thank you for being helpful. I guess "Columbus" goes out of question, hm? What can I say. Aliens are not in every UFO, some of them are just Boeings. When I drew this, I wasn't competing with Giger or Dali. When I started my first social network site 5 years ago, that someone decided to buy from me for $1,300 about 3 years ago, I wasn't competing with MySpace. More recently, when I started Authentic Society, I wasn't competing with its popular social network equivalents, all in the same way. In fact the more I work on software and user interfaces the more I realize that I have no passion for making something like popular social network site or imitating them. It's just something I wanted to do, because, well... I like doing these things. And after doing a lot of research and making notes about how Google finds websites, I thought, hey that would be fun to work on a program like that. Because. . . well, wouldn't it? The point here is to make it work, make it function... seeing a tangible version of whatever you envision being used by people is gratifying. Thinking about things like: taking 5 pages about similar subjects and designing a program that finds the best match is fun. These are the types of things I think about when I decide to start working on something. If someone creates a service better than Google, people will start using it. Look, we have Bing and they are doing relatively well standing in the shadow of Google. What will happen if someone figures a way to provide a better search engine? Quote:
Using this logic I started to brainstorm: Start with K,T,D (hard) Repetition of one letter Rhyme Plosives Alliteration Search Porch Find Kind Find Fi Mind Find Wind Finder Find Needle in Haystack Find Out Link, Connect Dash Exact, Precise, Accurate Do these words give you any ideas of your own? I'd like to hear!

But ya, as everyone else has basically said, you need to give people a reason to use your site instead of google, and that's going to be a tough sell. Instead of trying to tackle "search" in it's most broad form, a more niched down concept would be easier to gain traction on, something like pet search, automotive search, facial recognition search, etc.

Ignoring for the moment the quality of searches and assuming that you were offering an equal quality product, internet users have been in the habit of searching through google for years (or they just type into their browsers search bar and whatever is the default is what they search with). How will you convince people to use your search engine instead? I'm open to new ideas, so if it's actually an easy sell, try to sell me |

When Bill Gates introduces 'Bing', he said google had done a good job till then as a search engine but it was going to be Bing then after. But Bing is an utter failure. Google has done a lot in this. If you are doing it out of interest, it's fine then. But if you are wanting to compete with Google, better you invest your time in a new kind of application |

Two things: 1 - To come up with a successful business name, it needs to be catchy, original, and not already trademarked. The latter is almost impossible to do these days unless you make up a word yourself (joomla, picasa, etc), or derive a name by combining one or more words together (netflix, facebook, etc). 2 - There is an unfathomable amount of data that composes the internet. And, searching and indexing this data takes an immense amount of infrastructure (servers, routers, bandwidth, etc). Nontheless, I wish you the best of luck! And remember all it takes is one good idea and/or to stand out from the crowd. Surround yourself with brilliant and creative people, follow your passion, and the sky's the limit. |
