Hey, folks! The premise of this thread is that I'm running my website on a dedicated server in my living room, and I'd like to figure out just how much a similar (professional) hosting plan might cost. Basically, I want to know how much I'm saving and how much it's going to cost when I have to upgrade. For the curious: 2.8 GHz Core Duo (I think... it's either dual-core or dual-processor with single cores) 1GB RAM 10/100Mbit NIC 100Mbit connection... shared among ~4,000 students LAMP (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) + Wordpress 2.1 The site just launched on April 1st, so I don't have much of a measure of traffic, but I'm pretty sure the server hasn't even flinched. So, I have three questions: 1) What's your hardware/software configuration? 2) How much does your hosting plan cost (and who's it with)? 3) How much traffic is hitting your website, and how well does it hold up? Thanks in advance for your input! |

Here at work we have some massive Dual Xeon servers with maxed out RAM and RAID setups that are about $500 a month. We run several separate machine images on each box though - not sure, but think we run about 7 distinct servers per machine. W have a pretty complex architecture and setup though. If you can keep your machine running and you have the connection, hosting yourself is often the cheapest option. Once you get into serious territory, leasing the tech is much cheaper. We've got 20+ servers. The connection and bandwidth alone for those would be prohibitive if we were to host ourselves. All my personal hosting is done on cheap Hostgator and Dreamhost plans. I am launching a new mission-critical project and currently evaluating various VPS options (including Amazon EC2), with a redundancy that I will be hosting myself through a static IP on DSL. |

I still don't run my website but will be hitting public soon.. -AMD athlon xp 1500+ -1.25 GB RAM -40GB 7.200 RPM HDD -100 Mbit/s ethernet card -1024/256Kbit/s adsl link (will upgrade to 3Mbit/512kbit adsl, later to professional 4Mbit sDSL line) -anti-LAMP interbred of RoR and Lispy language The adsl line costs cca. 40$ for current 1Mbit line but it's great bundle for time being. Dedicated 4Mbit sDSL line will probably cost me cca. 250$ but i will use two or thre lines so it will be arround 700-800$US for 12Mbit dedicated line(s). |
