Default How to decrease the amount of spam in blog comments?

I get quite a lot of spam comments on my blog, most of them being either a copy-pasted link, or copy-pasted comment promoting some donation button app or whatever. Any ideas how to get rid of those?

Thanks!

Have you tried running Akismet?

What really helped me was adding the plugin Growmap Anti Spambot. It's the plugin that makes the responders check a box to confirm they're not spammers. That plugin is a gem!

I use Disqus. It it supposed to give commenters accountability. However, I still get plenty of spam.

I use Akismet, it comes already pre-installed in Wordpress, you just need to activate it from control panel.

When someone posts a comment on a blog, it connects to a spam database to check if the IP has spammed before or if the URL has been spammed, and if that's the case, it moves it to Spam folder.

So far Akismet filtered all the messages that were spam, but I will install captcha later too. "Sir Spamalot, you shall not pass the gates of my castle!"

Rock on!

I used Akismet and it's great. However, since I moved over to the Disqus commenting system, I've noticed that the spamming has gone down even more.

Akismet all the way. You can also get one of those plugins where the poster has to check the box that they aren't a spammer. Your spam counts will drop overnight.

I can think of two things besides Askimet. One is adding a CAPTCHA so bots have a harder time to get through. Another idea is adding a note at the bottom of your posts warning your readers not to spam (might scare them away).

There's also a list of keywords you can add in WP for a built in filter for what WP should look out for on comments. This should be done in addition to the akismet plugin and adding an anti-spam checkbox or captha. My spam levels have really decreased since putting these measures in place.

I use Akismet and the simple captcha plugin. Works really well together.
