| Better Place Why: Because they will end our oil-addcition. And as a bonus we get less respiratory disease. What do they do: They offer a network for electric cars. One can either charge the battery at a parking spot or at home or, if you want to drive for longer distances than your battery permits, you can swap your battery at a designated swap-station. That makes the electric car as useabe and convient as a gas car. |

I would say that it's probably Waldorf. They make electronic musical instruments, like this beauty (probably my favorite synth): I love them because they make top quality stuff that has it's own special character, but mostly because what I can do with these instruments brings me a ton of joy and satisfaction. Insanely good stuff. Last edited by Harald; 05-14-2011 at 10:58 AM. |

Stardock. Not for Windowblinds etc. - but for Galactic Civilizations II, and for the way they kept supporting and adding to that game. Major doubleplusgood. Also, their digital distribution stuff seemed less restrictive at any time than what I could find elsewhere, and still beats Steam hands down in that respect, even though they now partnered Impulse with Gamestop. Can't wait for a GalCiv3, or for a Master of Orion 2 remake, if that ever happens. |

Google, Amazon, and Netflix-Google because it's so incredibly useful (search, gmail, chrome), Amazon for the same reason, and Netflix because I love their recommendation system, even if I don't watch that many movies.

Was this thread inspired by the last blog article, Steve? Because I saw a connection while reading it, and as I think about it, all of these companies people mention here have, at least at some point, been adding to the evolution of humanity: Both Google and Amazon, for example, have made it much more easier and cheaper for people to gain access to knowledge, all over the world, and they are extreamly succesful companies. |

Apple, with Google coming a close second. Both companies combined over the last ten years have moved consumer and internet technology so much farther than if the industries had been left to Microsoft and IBM to develop.

Changing my answer to Google, Google, and Google, based on the freaking awesomeness of my new Droid Charge. Actually useful voice recognition makes "writing" emails on my phone faster than using my computer! Free traffic-adjusted GPS makes getting from place to place easy, not to mention I can directly search for a place by name and not have to know the address. Tons of free apps, ability to synchronize with Google Contacts/calendar, able to play better quality music than an iPod, Pandora/Kindle on the go...sorry Netflix, but you can't compete with something that essentially extends my brain |
