I started a few websites but have abandoned them because I chose topics that I could not sustain long-term (that I was interested in at one point, but became uninterested over time). Just curious how you chose your topics and how you kept it going? |

It took me over a year to figure out what kind of blog I wanted to create. I think the idea came as a result of creating a lot of posts on this forum. One theme that kept running through my posts was the concept of action. Actually doing something. As long as I'm active, I can explore that topic. I once posted about blogs having an expiry date. Is there a point in time when it's all been said? Is that a bad thing? Maybe you're better off creating a website than a blog. |

Same as you, stuff I'm interested in. Try stuff out and see what I end up coming back to. I think you're like me - lots of different interests, different ones in and out of favour at different times. Tim Ferris found a solution by making up a term "lifestyle design" and basically then writing about anything he wants. Honestly, I wouldn't start a site for the sake of starting a site, especially a content-based one. I think it has to be something inside of you bursting to get out, something with a lot of passion behind it. |

I agree with Warren, write what you're passionate about. I write about personal technology because I absolutely love it. My friends come to me with their issues and I love helping them. Quite a few people suggested I write a personal technology blog (I had never written a blog before), so I listened to them. Ask yourself, ask your friends, ask your family. And then consider if you really want to put in the time and perseverance to make it the best blog ever on the topic. One thing I wouldn't worry about? If others already are writing on the topic. If you are committed to being the best blogger ever, then you shouldn't worry about the competition. |
