While it is possible to use a spreadsheet as a data source for a web site, you will be a lot happier in the long run if you move the data to a database. I guess I would really need to know exactly how your web site is going to make use of the data. What do you want it to do? |

Do you have web development experience? These are the kinds of projects I do, but they can get rather complicated when you really go through everything that needs to be there. If this is for internal users, could you just put a copy of the spreadsheet on a network file folder and share it to everyone? Or another question, does your company have Sharepoint in use there?

Databases are a whole other beast from web development. You will probably want to contract that work out to a professional. An easier way would be to copy your spreadshhets over into google docs, then give read only access to those you wish to see the spreadsheet. You can make it so you are the only one who makes changes, yet allow others to see your information, without being able to make any changes. It's not as clean and incorporated into your site, but it's free... |

If you are pretty sure this needs to be in a database or web site, then the next question is, how important is it for you to get this done quickly, versus you taking time to learn something new? I'm all in favor of you being able to learn new things, but if you need to get this done quickly, you are probably better off bringing in someone who can do it for you. If this project is just something that a few people will be using, and you want to learn something new, and you can get your hands on a copy of Microsoft Access, and you have time to learn something as you get this project done, that would be a possible good starting point for you. I have known countless people over the years that are basically non-technical but have managed to learn enough to build a simple Access application with some nice user forms and reports. There are tons of learning materials on line, and you can get pretty darned far without ever writing a line of code. It can be shared and used in a corporate environment by your other users, as long as you don't get too complex. The reason I know this is because those homemade Access databases often take on a life of their own, get bigger and more complex, then they call me in to take the application to the next level. There are lots of ways you could go with this, but I'd need to see answers to the questions to know what to recommend next.
