Default Ubuntu Help?

Hi. I'd appreciate some help.

I just bought this and want to install Ubuntu on it.

I followed the instructions here (10.10 latest version, 64-bit) and loaded it onto this usb.

I can't even boot it. I keep getting a "could not find kernel image vesamenu.c32" error.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Try the 32 bit. With the amount of RAM on that laptop (32 bit can handle memory below 3.7 GB), it makes very little difference if you use 64 or 32 bit.

Yup, I think you might want to try the 32-bit version.

I downloaded Linux but have yet to install it. When I get a new laptop I'm going to put it on my existing "craptop" since I've always wanted to try it. Plus my craptop is 3 years old and it's starting to have issues. I'd reinstall windows but I don't have a disk. Oh well. No biggie. Wanna hear something funny? I still run XP. LOL I thought Vista was garbage so I skipped it and will just get Win7 on my new laptop.

Alright! Got some improvement. Finally got Ubuntu to boot from my usb. Downloaded the 32 bit. Guess I could have listened when I read "Recommended." I'm way too happy about this progress.

Now, I just have to figure out how to connect to my wireless.

Thanks again!

"Craptop"

I can't wait until I understand all this terminal jargon.

You don't have to use the terminal at all in Ubuntu.

True, but most of the documentation and help I've seen assumes some degree of familiarity with the terminal.

If you need help on anything Ubuntu-related, the Ubuntu forums will probably already have a thread on it. They have a section just for networking/wireless issues, too.

I've also found LinuxCommand to be a great tutorial on learning all things terminal.

Have fun!

As Ubuntu gets older, it gets less and less reliant on the terminal. What docs are you talking about? Installation of programs doesn't need the terminal, you can install via the Ubuntu Software thingy.

Yeah, I'm so glad they have a forum on there. Thank you for the tutorials link!

Right, yes, thank you. I should clarify that I understand I don't need to learn that part, I want to.

Most low-end computers/laptops are 32 bit.

You still need to know terminal to install programs, troubleshoot, and fix problems. The repository software is nice, but it's no replacement to using the terminal to mass-install programs on your system.

Eh. If you haven't seen Ubuntu recently, their Ubuntu Software installation thingy is really nice. I've tried it a few times, and it is so wonderful to look up things I want to install on the fly.

Does anyone know if you can boot Windows from a USB too, like Ubuntu?

I've never done it myself, but I found a tutorial here.

It is nice, but there are still a few packages that surprisingly aren't available through the Ubuntu Software Center. Like cinelerra, the video editor.

I switched to GNU/Linux after ten years with Mac OS X and I couldn't be happier.
