Default slow moving sites

Why are some sites slow and some sites faster? When I am web surfing and find an interesting site, if it is too slow or the scroll bar has a delay I leave the site and go onto the next. Since I am thinking of creating my own site, and want it to be fast what do I have to look out for, since I don't know anything about web hosting?

Some sites are slow because they are on servers with hundreds of other sites. If you're scrolling and things are still loading in the background, it could slow this down. Good hosting is expensive.

The speed of a website depends on both your own network and the website host's network.

If there's more traffic coming through than the web host can handle, then it's going to be slow.

Too many plugins, widgets, and other extras also slow a site down.

It really depends. E.g. widgets, large files like pictures and videos, etc.

Try using Chrome as your browser. It speeds things up; one site I couldn't manage browsing before is now comortably fast.
