Default Domain names

GoDaddy says .org domains are for non-profit organizations. Is it true?? Can I register a domain with .org for a non-non profit organization??

You can register any domain for anything to be honest - they do have rough guides, but Ive seen normal businesses registering .org or other domains...

I second that. You're supposed to adhere to those guidelines but they are often not. It's hard to choose a name other than one with a dot com since that seems to be given a higher value by the public (although not necessarily by the search engines).

The .name is supposed to be used by people and their own personal sites (correct me if I'm wrong) but still use the dot com (I'm guilty of that with my personal portfolio site).

Often an institution will take out a particular domain name with each extension, if just to dominate the name.

.org is supposed to be for non-profit, but it really is just more a guideline now.

There really aren't any differences between a .org, .net, .com, .anything except for the domain extension. Ideally, you want to get .com though since it's the most recognizable.

Ali! Whats up?

Back on topic, yeah I feel .com and .net are good if youre making a commercial website, my mind makes assumptions based off the extension.

.edu and .gov are the strict ones from what I know.

I used .com for my website as I found it tends to be for international businesses.

I understand the reason why to get a portfolio site which uses a .name. But the way I see it is it depends what the site is for. If your selling things then go for the usual .com .us .co.uk etc.. But even just having an online portfolio is selling yourself to employers, so I think stick with the .com on those occasions

I can see the .name (for personal sites) having a myspace / facebook kind of feel associated with them.

Sure, but why wouldn't you rather use the .com? If someone already has your dot com name, then the odds are it will be harder to get traffic to .org, so why not try .net instead?

They are supposed to be for non-profits... but people still use them unless you live in a country that regulates domain names properly
