Default Countdown Timer Program?

I'm looking for a simple free timer program. Let's say I'm setting a task on my to-do list for 60 minutes, I'd like to set it for 60 minutes and then play a mp3 and flash the screen once those 60 minutes are over. I'd like it to have a pause button also.

I'm currently using The Journal's Countdown Timer for this and while working pretty well, I'm looking for a standalone solution.

Anyone know of a free software that can do this?

Yes, I am also looking for something like that. One more feature I need are presets and possibility of one alarm triggering the next one.
Freeware application would be nice.

I make a playlist.
I use a blank MP3, that plays for 10 minutes six times in a row.
Afterwards I play the desired MP3.

You don't have the flash of the screen, but it works.

I went to my local dollar store and got a simple oven timer, goes upto an hour. Don't need a computer for it, so that really saves electricity and my time.

I looked around to find timer programs and none of them were satisfactory, so I just went with that idea.

Get yourself a stop watch, they are cheap, tons of time features and your not bound to a computer. You can also use it in conjuntion with anything in your life, not just when your behind a computer.

Thumbs up My Timeboxing

I believe I have exactly what you need.

I am author of program called "My Timeboxing", you can read more about it on my website:

Time boxing software - My Timeboxing by Dextronet

It plays WAV sound and display info box just like MSN messenger when time is over. You can pause, have more tasks, etc. Check it out. It has helped me personally to be more productive.

It is not free - however, we offer free 21-day trial and perhaps we could arrange a little discount .

The trouble with stop watches are that (AFAIK) they're passive - you can't set them to beep at a certain time so you have to remember to keep checking them.

OTOH, the alarm on your wristwatch should do the job just fine - for this sort of purpose you don't need the precision of a stopwatch.

When was the last time you bought a stop watch? All stop watches I see now days have alarms, multiple ones even.

As an update to this thread, I found this free program called Take a Break.

Been working great (although it hasn't been updated since 2004)! If anyone's found anything else like this - let us know!
