Default Dreamhost discount

I registered a domain with Dreamhost and tried to enter my discount code when registering but it wouldn't work for a mere domain registration.

Now that I am ready to pay for a year of hosting, Dreamhost says that I could only get the discount if I input the code when I originally signed up for the domain name (which was not an option).

I think I now have two options:

1. Go with another host
2. Suck up the extra cost

Thoughts on other hosts? Ideas? Suggestions?

I'm using dreamhost and they are going through a lot of problems right now. I used the discount code, which dropped my payments to about $25 for this year. This also means that next year it's going to be about $100, which is rather expensive.

You are probably better off going with another provider. I have used globat in the past and they have a pretty good web service, although they have pretty bad customer service.

As a rule of thumb, you shouldn't register domain names with web hosting companies. You may have problems transferring them later on (and I reckon they wouldn't really want to provide name servers for your domain if you were to switch to another host at some point). It's best to use a company like godaddy.com for domain registration, and a separate company for web hosting.

If you do intend to switch to another host, I recommend pair.com. There's probably no other shared hosting company that's equal to them in reliability, security and customer service. They're by far not the cheapest around, but well worth it. I've been with them since 2004, and before that I must've gone through at least three other hosts.

lol I would need to get the developer setup to host all my sites.

I have more than 20 sites and databases.

$50 a month is a bit steeper than the $10 I pay at Dhost.

Seriously guys $10 a month for hosting? It is it really that much of a stretch. You probably spend more than that each day on food.

You can easily make $10 a month on a blog with adsense or something.

I have a blog that I don't bother to advertise or anything and it still makes more than $10 a month from ads.

On a side note. A guy I know is starting his own hosting service up soon. With his own servers not a reseller.

I will let you know if he decides to price it competitively.

Globat Hosting have a 'one year free' deal but you won't find it mentioned on their homepage.
