Default An E Reader For Those Who Shop Around?

So I want an E Reader, but I refuse to buy a device that will restrict my freedom.

I want to be able to buy ebooks from any vendor and display them on my reader.

This would seem to rule out the kindle and the upcoming nook.

It's my understanding that I can do this with the Sony Reader. Is that correct?

Do most vendors allow you to download files and move them around between devices?

I also do not want to be in a situation of buying all my books through, say, Barnes and Noble because I bought a Nook, and then five years down the line buy some other reader that will only let me display books from another retailer, and so lose access to all my B&N purchases.

What would you guys recommend? Anything on the market that suits me? What do you use?

I have a Sony Ereader (Kindle wasn't available in the UK when I bought it - and I was not too impressed with the idea that you can't download kindle books on to a pc and they can zap them at will!)

I can read the designed for purpose ebooks, PDF files (all those 'free report' downloads!) - and - I haven't tried it - but MS Word files as well. Here's a link you may find useful:

What is a Reader? : Sony

You can even put photos on it (though they render in grayscale not colour) and listen to .mp3 files on it.

It can take additional memory cards - eg I'm using microSD in mine in an adaptor.

You can't wirelessly download which you can with kindle apparently, but I don't see that as much of a problem compared to the benefits of having backup storage on computer and being able to read a variety of formats sourced from anywhere.

What online stores allow you to download an actual file to your hard drive and then put it on your sony ereader? B&N?

Well in the UK, the Sony "preferred supplier" is Waterstones
but anywhere you can get a digital book to download.

But here's a another ebook store I found just googling, Ebooks | Books on Board | Online eBook Store, Downloadable Audio Books, Digital eBooks | Ebooks | BooksOnBoard

Or free ones from Project Gutenberg

just google ebooks and see what comes up!

Thanks.

If anyone else has opinions, I'd be glad to hear them.

Hi! You could give us a shot at CyberRead.com

Use this code for 25% off: EBOOKS

BTW, I have a Sony device and quite like it. Essentially you'll likely want to use Adobe Digital Editions and purchase ePub and PDF titles.
