Question Converting MPG to AVI

Can anyone recommend a decent freeware or shareware (up to a max of $29.99) able to do this?

I have a load (134) of MPG files over 1GB each and would like to see if AVI is smaller - I can't help noticing that AVI files of 1.5hour movies are only 700MB so should be able to get this MPG files - 48 mins each - down to around 350MB hence saving me about 90GB of disk space.

I'm trying a few out but of course they only output 50-60% of the converted file so I can't really see if they substantially reduce the size or not.

Thanks - I've given that a try but it's inflating the files further still!!
I have found another one for about $9 (faststudio) which - on the 50% file it output cut the size dramatically - but so far I have attempted to purchase it using both paypal and credit card on two separate days with no luck!
I've emailed them twice now.
You wouldn't think it was so hard to legitimately use the software would you!!

I found prism video converter worked pretty well and it was free although I didn't use files as large as you are talking about.

Thanks - I'm just trying out the Prism converter now to see what quality I get.

Meanwhile, I complained bitterly to RegNow.com who are the people you buy the other software through and they put me on to the seller (of FastStudio) direct who has emailed me a different link to pay with so I have done that. $7.99

I did try another very satisfactory one, went to purchase it and blow me if it didn't push me right back at RegNow.com to buy it through, so I abandoned it.

Does anyone here outside the US successfully manage to purchase software registrations through RegNow?

PS I'm converting the same file (from two separate discs) at the same time using Prism and using Fast Studio. I started the FastStudio some 10 mins after the Prism and it has already overtaken it in progress through the mpg file (the FastStudio is converting from an external HD and the prism from my C drive).

I shall let you know my verdict at the end!

Verdict:

FastStudio MPG to Any converter (price $7.99) - took 52 minutes to convert a 1.1GB mpg file to a 208MB Avi file. Quality - around 95% of the original (based on watching the first few minutes of the converted file).

Prism (Free) - has taken more than 60 minutes to convert the first 12 minutes of the mpg file to 109MB - so scaling up (its 42 mins long in all) that makes around 400MB. Quality -I don't know as I am calling off the hounds.

So, if you want to do this, I recommend the FastStudio. The problem you will have if you want to buy the software (and therefore get 100% conversions) is potentially the RegNow.com site if you are outside the US.

Thumbs up

I am going to rave about this little piece of software FastStudio well worth the hassle it took to buy it for $7.99!

Yesterday, I converted 22 (total 28GB) of .mpg files to just 936MB of .3GP (mobile-phone friendly) files - approx 20 mins to convert 1.2GB mpg to 42MB of .3gp. Quality is almost as good as the original mpg files.

I can now use my mobile phone as a mini-movie player. Just wish it would read microSD cards bigger than 2GB!

PS here's the website FastStudio – Free Downloads - FastStudio site

Yeah quicktime pro, does cost a little more though, but actually I find it a really handy quick program to do things in. If I want to edit simple footage it's really easy, you just set your in and out points and select cut and bobs your uncle.

Last night I used it for adding a soundtrack to a movie clip, all I did was open up the original movie, made sure there was an in and out point at the beggining, then opened up the soundtrack copied that and selected, "add to movie". Save and your done!

I would tell you to use whatever the forums at doom9.org tells you to use.. last time I was given advice there it was avidemux and another authored program from that site..

Nothing as far as I'm aware beats the pants off the x264 codec (MPEG4) for streaming/quality/small file size (a small change from the h264 codec..)

AVI .NET (the software, not the site) is free and may work.
