Recently i heard a great quote.. "if you have questions about linux, then it isn't for you". But actually, the ONLY smartest way is to at first test ubuntu or mint, then only try the more complicated distributions. Those are the only things to know before you install linux (dual boot with windows would be good, if you are a mega-windows user for years and don't know anything else than xp, vista, win7 etc |

Rather, if you have no questions about Linux, then it isn't for you. If you have few questions about Linux, you might want to install Ubuntu and scratch the surface. If you have many questions about Linux, you're interested and want to find answers. If you have lots of questions about Linux, you're a real Linux user.

I didn't get a chance to read all the posts in this thread, so not sure if someone already mentioned this before. But google recently announced that they will be releasing Google chrome OS, which is essentially a custom google windows environment on top of existing Linux kernel. In simple words, it will be a Linux distribution made by Google (much like Ubuntu). This is a very exciting time for Linux Lovers (like myself), because finally we are getting some major backing from a corporation who has both the money and the power to promote it to mainstream users in the desktop/netbook market. I use Linux - Windows - OSX on a daily basis and have a soft spot for Linux. |

Just as a side note, I've been helping a "normal" friend of mine fix his WinXP box...where his web connection suddenly stopped working. He had Norton (anti)-virus installed, but that hasn't helped much. Running some malware detection tools on his machines I found FOURTY malware. Twenty or so adware, and the rest a nasty mix of trojans, backdoor software and irc bots (the kind used for DoS attacks). After removing all this crap, doing boot time virus scan, and more. His machine is still not good. I turned to Google for some ideas, and most of what I found required me to use the command line. I'm going back to his place later this week, to try and get his machine working properly (a re-install would be best, but he has lost his WinXP Home cd). It's not all bad though, as he's a great cook and generally cooks up something tasty for me while I'm hacking away at his machine. p.s. Anyone know if I can use my WinXP Pro cd, to install WinXP Home on his machine. His license number is still on a sticker on the machine, but I'm not sure it works. |

Worst case scenario you can't install with that key. Install Ubuntu for him As far as security, I highly recommend - avira (free) for antivirus Free antivirus - Avira AntiVir and spybot (free)for anti-malware The home of Spybot-S&D! Firefox 3.5 for browser (the source of most virus/malware) and the dedication to do regular full system scans (once a week). Last edited by pavs; 07-14-2009 at 01:48 AM. | |

I don't think the keys quite work like that. I have an XP key on my PC and it didn't work with the version of Windows I downloaded (I didn't get a CD with the PC). I had to use a keygen and then crack WGA to download updates. Pain in the tits.

I'm rather sceptical on using my key. I don't want my XP install to suddenly stop working, or updates to stop working, because it's installed on some other computer. |
