Question Free Blog Traffic

My blog is about a month in half old. I am getting next to nothing in traffic. What is a good way to build free blog traffic?

Thanks

Use digg.com. I get a lot of traffic using digg.

Use Stumbleupon.com. Get some from there too.

Post comments on other peoples blogs, with link to your blog attached.

Take part in Problogger.net's group writing project. They are every now and then.

Have the url to your blog in your e-mail signature.

First of all, it's winter in the Northern Hemisphere. There won't be too many people doing landscaping this time of year in the US, except in the deep south. I'm in VA, and the ground is quite frozen now. Things should pick up in the spring. You might want to start hanging around forums that specialize in DIY and gardening/landscaping (two that I visit from time to time). If you have the time, volunteer to become a moderator. If you have a specialty such as organic/biodynamic/edible landscaping, visit the appropriate web forums and network there as well. If that is your type of thing, submit an article to path to freedom.

One thing that I noticed is that many of your articles are way too short. It is one thing to make people aware of the concept of companion planting, for example. Your post did do that, but you could have done much more. You didn't include any links to more information, provide charts on what plants do/don't work well together or explain in more detail why companion planting works. Research the science behind it, boil it down into information the average knucklehead can use, and write about it. Right now, a thirty year old issue of Mother Earth News found at a rumage sale for twenty five cents has more information on companion planting than your blog does. If you have a digital camera, include your own photographs, rather than relying on a stock photo library. Write on seasonal topics. Since it's winter, write on protecting landscaping from frost damage (for example). In other words, give people a reason to visit your blog. You are off to a decent start with a well-designed site and a good domain name. Now, you need some more content.

If you become well known as a reliable source for landscaping information, you will have all kinds of traffic to your site.

Comment a lot on other peoples blogs that are related to yours. I mean a lot, don't spam, say something useful, but the more comments the better. Post frequently to the StevePavlina forums, especially if your site is relevant. Try blogmad.net, blogexplosion.com, or blogsoldiers. These are traffic exchange programs. You look at other blogs, other people go to yours in return.

The best way to get a really big surge is from the social sites: digg/reddit/delicious/stumbleupon but this hard to force. Write good content and it should happen naturally. Remember traffic building is a long term commitment and don't be disappointed if you only see a trickle.

Also be aware that it will take time before Google 'trusts you' and sends more traffic your way. Some say it takes 6 months before you get out of the 'sandbox' and rate higher in searches, which will generally result in more traffic.

I will second the forum suggestions. Pretty much all the traffic I get for my blog is from different forums.

Find the right ones and become a useful member of the community, and people will visit more often.

As is mine but there's no need to worry rusty - blog traffic can take a long time to build up. Just keep focused on the long view and keep working hard and people will notice it.

My blog hasn't been noticed yet - but it's only a month old. I only expect the traffic to start rising significantly at the year mark. So I'm not becoming too attached to my results at the moment - I'm just letting the experience flow.
