Hey all, I'm new to this forum, though I have been reading Steve's blog for quite a while already. I finally decided and started moving to make my own blog/site, focusing not really in personal development but in seduction and relationships instead. I have been writing a few articles and already got a domain and host.. What I'm missing is a good blogging platform. I got wordpress, some nice themes.. But so far couldn't find the right one. I wish I could have something like Steve's, simple yet practical and ad-friendly. I saw some blogs with the same layout and started mailing to see how they got it.. But I thought it would be cool if asked here too! I'm quite beginner with internet programming, so if you guys can give me a hand here I would be really grateful! Thanks and have a nice day! |

I think Steve's is WordPress backend with his own theme. He's added the advert support and layout himself, which allows greater control, while still having the power of wordpress behind it. There are thousands of themes for wordpress, and if you have some money to spend, you could get someone to make you one specific to how you want it. As for other blogging platforms, I haven't used them much. |

Since we're on the subject, how exactly do you create your own layout for a Wordpress blog? I already know how to mimic this layout in html and css, that's what I did on my site. But with Wordpress, is it the same process? And what do you think about the fact that most of the links (recent articles, best of stevepalina, com, categories, etc) are being pushed very low on the page, because of the Amazon ad and the other recommended products? Wouldn't you be concerned that the visitors will not see where the blog posts are to be found and just give up and exit the site? |

I really don't know how challenging it is to make your own Wordpress layout, but it's worth looking into. I just took the default one they gave me on my blog and tweaked the colors a little. Just don't spend too much time worrying about the layout. The content is the most important part of a blog. While you're waiting to find the perfect layout, choose one that will do for now and then keep writing until you find the perfect layout. Or create the perfect layout.

It is hard to find a suitable free theme. If you are willing to pay a little bit, you have a lot more options. The Thesis Theme from DIY Themes — The ultimate premium WordPress theme marketplace is clean and attractive, extremely user-friendly and has great support (including a whole community to ask questions). It's $87 but the amount of time you save will be worth far more than the purchase price. There are also quite a few nice 'premium' wordpress themes in the $20 range. |

Why not just copy the .css of someone else and modify it (it's not illegal... you're gonna have different names for the divs, a different order, different text styles, colors etc). Plus, there are some great free templates. For example, the one I'm using is very much like Steve's, and it's extremely simple. Just Google 2 column liquid layout (or 3 column holy grail if you want 3 columns).

I suggest learning html yourself. Find a cheap "learn html" book at a used bookstore and just start reading and using what it tells you to do. Make SURE that the book is targeted for absolute beginners. That way, it will explain things as easily as possible. I don't know any programming languages, but I know enough html to make a simple website layout like Steve's blog design. I learned almost everything I know from one simple book that I think was called "Total Beginner's Guide to Designing Websites" or something similar. It will be much cheaper to learn how to do it yourself, rather than pay someone else to do it. |
