Default Amazon Kindle 2

Just got this email from Amazon today. I love it!

...

Today, we introduced Kindle 2, the next generation of our wireless reading device.

Because you already ordered the original Kindle and are awaiting its arrival, we're pleased to inform you that we are upgrading your order so that you will receive the new Kindle 2. You will be in the first group to receive Kindle 2, and you will receive yours as soon as Kindle 2 becomes available later this month. You need not do anything.

With a new sleek design, Kindle 2 has seven times more storage and carries over 1,500 titles. An advanced display provides even crisper images and clear text for an improved book-like reading experience. Page turning is faster, the battery life is 25% longer, and our new 'Text-to-Speech' feature means Kindle can even read to you.

Read more about Kindle 2 at http://www.amazon.com/kindle2

That's awesome, that they upgraded you w/o you even asking. Maybe you'll let me know what you think of it after you've used it a few times

Once you try it could you tell us if it is good for photo reading. Like turning pages really fast. And does it have most personal development books downloadable?

Glad you finally received your Kindle 2, Steve. I've seen the videos on Amazon.com. It looks really good for someone in your income bracket. It is kind of pricey, but you're providing enough value that it's not even a second thought for you. I can see it becoming a big deal in the next 10 years. It does save on paper. And it's very small, compact, very minimalist. I may invest in one in the near future. It looks like it will be great for Photoreading.

Am i the only one who thinks the book industry is kind of crazy to bring e-readers to the market? They are going to be the next music industry if these things are becoming popular.

You can't simply open one of your own pdf on the kindle.
Sooner or later someone will create good e-readers. If those readers are controlled by the book industry the book industry profits.

The problem with the music industry was that they resisted the change and didn't do something liek itunes immidieatly.

Talking about this in terms of “bad news” or “bad judgment by business leaders” seems archaic. It’s like describing World War One as “a serious diplomatic concern.”

I think the problem is that you will be able to download books for free, as you can do with music now.
You are from Germany, so maybe you've read what Germany's book publishers planned solution to this problem is: DRM and sueing people who download illegal copies. This will so not work.

Reality check:
You can download most popular books as ebooks since years.

Sure. But reading on the screen sucks. And printing them out is unhandy.

With the kindle, you can send a document to it wirelessly for 10 cents.. or send it to amazon and they will email you the converted doc and you can transfer it to the kindle via usb for free. So then you dont have to read on the screen or print it out.

If you send a copy of a book you don't own to amazon, amazon might not give you the converted doc.
That why Amazons strategy of being the producer of screen reading devices is a good strategy for them.

Cool!
For those outside US, even Kindle 1 sounds like some Star Trek Invention.

How would amazon have any idea if you own it or not??? There are lots of books you can buy from other places and not thru amazon.
