I've been using Google Analytics to track my traffic and recently became suspicious of its accuracy. I did some Googling on the matter and found a lot of people claiming that it severely under reports traffic. Does anyone know if this is true? And, what more accurate services (preferably free) can be used to track traffic?

John, I noticed your site is stored on gridserver.com (mediatemple.net) and apparently they offer Urchin, which is now Google Analytics. Are there no other built-in site analysis tools in your hosting account? FYI: On my server, CPanel is installed, so I have access to Analog, Webalizer and AWStats (plus all raw access log files). |

Yes, I recently started checking Urchin and the stats show much higher traffic than Analytics. Which one is more accurate? Of course I'd like to believe the higher ones, but I'm worried spiders maybe getting counted.

No analytics programs are 100% accurate, but Google Analytics is just about as accurate as any others you would get that use javascript code on your site. You could put the code at the top of the pages if you suspect there might be a problem where the complete page doesn't load and therefore you don't record the visitor.

Besides Google Analytics, which is probably one of the best in the market currently, another notable one which has received good reviews would be 103bees - Search engine traffic analysis and statistics tool. I run both GA and 103bees on my site. Recently, the latter has also added spot question search queries into the program that allows you to know what visitors searched for that led them to your site. This allows you to write targeted posts as you know what your visitors are searching for. Hope this helps. |

I have been with Statcounter.com for 3 years and think they are great. My 2 other "backup" stats tracking systems are Google analytics and Cpanel Awstat .

It is appreciated it if you could give the steps to install the software you have just mentioned. In any case would google use their own analytics to pay us? regards Beneficial Learning for Outstanding Generation | |
