Default Recommended Shopping Cart

Hi guys,

I just wanted to know what shopping cart software you use - or if you have another system for selling things online. Any feedback, advice, or recommendations for good ones would be much appreciated

I'd recommend Magento.

Depends on what you're selling. If it's just a few items, then I'd recommend Clickbank because you can get other affiliates promoting for you.

If it's a suite of products, and you don't mind recruiting your own affiliates, then go with something like 1shoppingcart or Nanacast

What about if you have 3000 or more products? I'm researching osCommerce, but not yet decided.

I use Mal's Ecommerce, Mal's e-commerce - A FREE Shopping Cart Service. I like the flexibility it offers in customizing the cart to fit my needs or those of my clients. I also like that it doesn't hinder my SEO efforts. However if you have a large number of products a database driven cart may be your best bet.

On another note Practical Ecommerce has been running a "cart of the week" series on different shopping carts and their features which you may find helpful. The latest is on Volusion. You can check it out here, Cart of the Week: Volusion | Practical eCommerce. You'll find links to the rest of the series on that same page under Related Articles at the bottom.

Of these, I think Magento is the closest to what I need.

I have to say though, the template system is driving me a bit nuts. Seem overly complicated.

This is why I typically work with the Mal's cart. It allows me the freedom to incorporate the cart into my existing web pages meaning I'm not locked into a template structure which is not only constricting but also usually lacks in the ability to build W3C compliant and search engine friendly pages. Although some newer carts are getting better in the SEO department.

Well, I switched to Mal's and I actually like it a lot - I think it's a lot easier to use and understand if you have a basic knowledge of HTML.
