I just spent an hour messing with OpenID trying to understand it. I've essentially come down to this website as the best and most useful how-to: Use your own URL as an OpenID — OpenID Enabled You can get your own Livejournal account and use them as a OpenID server if setting up your own was too much work (as it was for me, since I don't have control over my hosting service).
