I use and recommend Dreamhost. A bit of Google Magic and you should be able to come up with a discount code for Dreamhost ... just make sure you get the full $97.

I also have stuff with Hostgator. They're pretty good as well.

If people are willing to pay a premium, I've heard great things about MediaTemple. Their basic package is $20 a month.

Personally I use Dreamhost (aff), which offers great value for the money ($9.95 in my case).

I'm not an "easy mark" when it comes to web hosting. Until a couple of years ago I had been with the same small Salt Lake City based company for five years or more--pretty much since there *was* a web they had hosted my sites. Anyway, they got out of the business unannounced and just pulled the plug on my site.

In the past couple of years I had tried at least a half dozen web hosting companies and hadn't been happy with any of them for one reason or another. Then a friend recommended Dreamhost......it got off to a rocky start when there was some problem about setting up my domain properly. But their customer service in dealing with it was beyond amazing--they actually *took responsibility* for the problem, fixed it in a matter of hours and gave me four months of free hosting for my trouble.

Since then Dreamhost has continued to exceed my expectations on a daily basis. They're very reasonably priced but they could triple their prices and I'd stay with them with out question because they're just so good....

Having to switch webhosts is a pain, and I'm glad there's one less thing to worry about on a daily basis. Not that there aren't other good hosting outfits but I haven't personally dealt with any that are even close to Dreamhost...

Add another point dreamhost. I love those guys. I use them for all my hosting. I have tried a few different ones, but then i stumbled on dreamhost's site and have been a very happy customer ever since. Their people really know their stuff, great service, great features, great communication, and aweseome newsletters. Their newletters are funny and informative. I could not be happier with them.

Hi,
I am using a webhosting on my own server. If you think about a really large web project, I can strongly recommend Layered Technologies (Layered Technologies). They are very kind and have the best server hosting performance/price offers that I have ever found.

I host at ServInt Internet Services - Managed Dedicated Server & VPS Provider with both a solo at $299.00 per month and a deuce at $149.00 per month. I host a number of my own sites and a few for friends and a charity which I support.

They are not cheap but the service is extremely reliable and I have never had a problem which customer service was unable to solve very quickly.

I provide hosting via HostingForAQuid. It's inexpensive hosting ideal for first-time to intermediate users, with a nice control panel and one-click installers for a whole bunch of things, including WordPress, GeekLog, Joomla and lots more.
I like to think my prices are fair and reasonable, I use my own services myself for all of my own websites and client sites, and I'd stake my forum reputation on these claims.
(users in the US - yes, we will sell you hosting, and PayPal will sort out the exchange rate - it's still pretty cheap, even when converted to US dollars)

Enter "PAVLINA" in the Discount Code box for a 10% discount.

I'm looking on hosting a blog type website. I was inspired by this very website. I want to do something very similar to what Steve has done.

Anyway, approximately how much space would one need for a extensive blog/article site (like Steve's) and how much traffic would one need. I'm just not sure.

I'm pretty sure that the space wouldn't be an issue since it would be mostly text and a few small images. But how much bandwith would be needed?

Regards,
Ryan

Why not get a blog with someone like WordPress, bandwidth will not be an issue and if you want your own domain name you can map it to the blog - Domain Registration and Mapping « WordPress.com

The reason that I didn't go that route is because I still want to be able to write some code for my site.

I didn't think this was possible with blog sites such as WordPress.

Is it?

No, WordPress don't allow html on blogs that are hosted on WordPress.com. I think the rest do to some extent. If you want to go the way of running the blog entirely yourself, there is webhosting that allows blog software installation - usually with something called 'Fantastico'.

'richie' in an early post in this thread says he runs the hosting company - Mydosty. I haven't used it and this isn't a personal recommendation but the service looks cost effective for what is on offer. It has Fantastico and judging by the control panel it allows the installation of WordPress and three other blog softwares. Although you can also install your own, yourself

Try and find a webhost that has a monthly bandwidth allowance of at least 3GB. Some offer a starter of 500MB, which is ok until someone mentions you and links to your blog bringing too much traffic. So 3-5GB a month is a good minimum.

I made an earlier post in this thread indicating WordPress would do these things but was talking about WordPress hosted at other hosting providers. Sorry for any misdirection!

Default File Sharing

Limewire is the exact opposite of a file sharing service. Limewire doesn't store your files. I reccommend MediaFire for your everyday file. You can create a free account and keep track of all of your uploads. It always gets good reviews and is very reliable.

Default Advice on a good web host and Forum App

Does anyone have experience running a forum? I am helping a buddy set up a forum for a informal group that he is involved in.

One thing I would like to be able to do is set him up with a host that is:

1) inexpensive
2) One-Click install of a good (recommended?) forum app

Also, I am not all that familiar with forum apps, but it would be cool if the patches and upgrades for the forum app was as easy as possible.

My current host (GoDaddy) offers one-click upgrades for WordPress...which is cool (they are pretty slow with the upgrades, which means I am always behind in version).

Is this an issue with forum apps?

THANKS!

Default Dream Host

Hi,

I was looking for a better hosting plan when I stumbled upon this thread, when I checked out Dream Host I saw that they have a limited birthday special which will give you unlimited disk and unlimited transfer volume. Currently there are only very few such accounts left, so you better hurry.

I already signed up and really like what I'm seeing so far.

__
Gunsou

PS: I just created a promo code, so if you enter BETTERSETUP you can get $50 off (Thats the setup fee).

Update: I moved my website from the godaddy servers to dreamhost yesterday and now it runs about ten times faster. It also seems that some limits have been released or are at least loosened up. I can't talk about performance under load though, because the site is still under development. I will now try to setup SVN to manage the source of my website.
