The reason that I didn't go that route is because I still want to be able to write some code for my site.

I didn't think this was possible with blog sites such as WordPress.

Is it?

No, WordPress don't allow html on blogs that are hosted on WordPress.com. I think the rest do to some extent. If you want to go the way of running the blog entirely yourself, there is webhosting that allows blog software installation - usually with something called 'Fantastico'.

'richie' in an early post in this thread says he runs the hosting company - Mydosty. I haven't used it and this isn't a personal recommendation but the service looks cost effective for what is on offer. It has Fantastico and judging by the control panel it allows the installation of WordPress and three other blog softwares. Although you can also install your own, yourself

Try and find a webhost that has a monthly bandwidth allowance of at least 3GB. Some offer a starter of 500MB, which is ok until someone mentions you and links to your blog bringing too much traffic. So 3-5GB a month is a good minimum.

I made an earlier post in this thread indicating WordPress would do these things but was talking about WordPress hosted at other hosting providers. Sorry for any misdirection!

What would you do if you want to host it yourself? Are servers expensive? Do ISP providers allow it etc.?

Just thinking about it, not sure how practical it is though.

To host yourself you would rent a portion of a server from a company specializing in doing hosting for clients. I host at ServInt Internet Services - Managed Dedicated Server & VPS Provider it is more expensive and provides more resources than you need at the stage of development of your project.

I see several hosting providers mentioned on the forum including some who are members here. You should be able to find hosting for ten dollars or less per month. If your site grows and you need to upgrade to a more expensive and powerful server later the upgrade can be accomplished when needed.

Thanks,
Actually I already have hosting (Darn good hosting too, for only $4 per month), I was just seeing if you could somehow do it from home for free or something.

(I have a few spare computers at home that aren’t used as often, thinking maybe I could turn them into server support or something when I needed it.)

BTW, my current web host I use is Total Choice Hosting

Hello. You can do hosting at home if you have ADSL or SDSL - for nothing. In fact I host a small, non-popular, business website at home using a very small Linux embedded (Acme Systems Foxboard) computer attached to the router via a LAN cable.

I have a domain name and can access the settings to change the IP address to my home ADSL connection. I set the router to allow incoming traffic on port 80 to go to the Linux box. Obviously you don't want to do this if you have a popular website as you won't be able to handle the traffic. Also your ISP has to be liberal and not some large, dismal, populist dictator like Tiscali or BT, such as we have in the UK. Because, many ISPs won't allow incoming traffic on port 80.

The other choice is co-location where you hand over your server to a hosting company - one that actually has a datacentre. This isn't cheap, but you get much more freedom.

Exclamation

A 'sidebar' to this discussion. There are lots of high quality hosts out there. There are also some red flags - if these things are offered, run fast the other way:
  • unlimited bandwidth
  • unlimited disk space
  • lifetime hosting for a single payment
They would be lovely if they were possible. They're not, and the results are unlovely. (I haven't been burned myself, but I know of people who have, for instance when their 'lifetime hosting' packed up after a matter of months.)

I think HostMonster has some of the best "bang for the buck." It is pretty cheap and has great technical support. (I recommend it...)

Default Some Tips..

If you want to host multiple websites get a reseller account. I've got a number of sites either in development (or decline!) and can highly recommend Hostgators reseller accounts. I haven't had any major woes with them for close to 2 years. For $25 a month I get 25gb of storage space and 250Gig of bandwidth, unlimited domains (which I manage using the included Web Host Manager-WHM) and the really useful script installer Fantastico. Basically Fantastico has a whole bunch of click to install web scripts like content management systems (Drupal and Word Press for instance) and a pile of other useful apps.

You can never over research your webhost. Google webhosting forums and look for user feedback on your potential host before you sign up.

I use 110MB.com I'm perfectly satisfied with them. 5 GB of space, 300 GB bandwidth, lots of 1 click installs, NO ADS, and they give this to you all for FREE.

May be you're a bit mistaken. If you need multiple web site hosting, you don't need a reseller account, but just a regular account with unlimited addon domains [Multiple websites].
Reseller account is something which is used to resell hosting, to be a hosting provider yourself.
Hope I made things a bit clear.

Lover

I've had no problems with www.godaddy.com so far.

Although i'm considering getting a second account with Dreamhost simply because they offer SVN and CVS(i.e. code backup, to put it in non-technical terms).

Thanks for that. I do understand that you can have multiple websites without a reseller account. I should have said that it makes things easier to manage having a separate control panel for each domain (which reseller accounts come with-most usually Plesk or CPanel). A lot of web developers (not just resellers) have reseller accounts simply because if you have bunches of clients websites and lots of domains, they're easier to maintain, check stats, add scripts etc if they're not all crammed onto one control panel!

All the best

Ade

Keep your domains separate from your host!

A common mistake people make is to register domains through a hosting provider. This might seem convenient at the time, but if you want to leave your web host you may have trouble taking your domain with you.

I recommend Namecheap for domain registration. You can get current discount coupons from:

I switched to Hostgator a few weeks back, my old one was giving me problems, I don't even have access to my forums anymore, they shut that account down, now I'm in the process of transferring them over to HG with just backups I downloaded from cpanel.

Anyway, thats where I moved to.

I don't understand how this can be a problem?? If they try that can't you report them to the whois guys (not sure if that's the right name, but you get my drift)

There are lots of free webhosting sites. People tend to think of free hosted sites as not very important. If you can't spend even 4 -10 a month to get a nice clean hosted site some people figure it isn't worth their time to read it either.
Plus some advertisers won't accept sites that are free hosted.
The cost isn't much and if you go with something like Host Gator you can get a few friends in on it too, they allow for unlimited domains on a regular hosting package.

Default Hostgator

I use Hostgator! Lots of space, good support, easy to use, cpanel...

One of the 3 best hosting companies according to CNET, and Google rank . But if you need like really, really huge space and performances, and you have big wallet, go with Godaddy.com

Default File Sharing

Limewire is the exact opposite of a file sharing service. Limewire doesn't store your files. I reccommend MediaFire for your everyday file. You can create a free account and keep track of all of your uploads. It always gets good reviews and is very reliable.
