Hi there, I'm looking for a hosting service, maybe you can point me to any that fulfills our requirements. The people we've been working with have been really sloppy with their service, yet refusing to give us ssh access so that we can fix stuff ourselves. So this is what I want: * Linux, preferrably Debian, but RHEL/CentOS is ok. * VPS or other kind of virtualization so we can have ssh access to the system, for restarting servers, doing backups and so on. * Of course, being able to install our own software, via package management or source code building. Not one of those pre-packaged PHP+MySQL sites. * If possible, not very expensive (in the range $30-50) So if you know any good hosting that can provide us with this functionality please tell us so. Thanks in advance.

Hi Wulfen, i use Host Europe - Web Hosting Provider - World Class Internet Services and i am very satisfied with their linux vps. Quite cheap at € 10/month. Since they are a subsidiary of Web hosting made easy - WebFusion, i suppose that company will offer similar vps packages although at a slightly higher price (starting from 20 pounds/month). Maybe not feasibly if you are US based, though? |

Dreamhost might have what you need, but I generally recommend researching at WebHostingTalk Forums - Web Hosting Discussion--it's a huge forum site about webhosts.

I found that host monster had a good hosting & domain package deal, you can check it out here: Host Monster - Web hosting Last edited by MattUK; 12-21-2006 at 12:30 AM. |

Have you tried Chrono Hosting? They've got shared, Dedicated, and simple web hosting as well. I think you can get Windows OS, instead of Linux, if you ask... (it's like $20 more or something each year?) <a href="http://www.cmuscatine.com">http://www.cmuscatine.com/hosting/</a> Not bad at all I'd say. I host a couple of videogames with them. |

I've heard some very good things about SolarVPS, though I have not used them myself. Their VPS prices range from $45-$80. You can get a cheaper VPS, but you might find that many providers tend to oversell. We used to have a VPS with LiquidWeb but cancelled the account almost immediately because it was very slow (took 45-60 seconds for a site to load). |

We spent a ton of time looking into this for LearnOutLoud and ultimately went with HttpMe.com. No regrets whatsoever. I would highly recommend them.

| Internet Domain Name Registration, Domain Transfers. Your domain name search starts here. They provide 5 gigs of space, with 250gigs of transfer a month, for 4 bucks a month. They also have a sale where if you purchase a product that isnt a domain name (like 4 dollar hosting), you can register a domain for 2 bucks. 6 bucks to start up a website? Not bad. |

I use 1and1 and have been pleased with them thus far. I just haven't checked all the applications you mentioned.

I'm using bluehost. Haven't tested out other applications too like Milo Riano so can't comment. But today, my server went down, again. This is the 2nd time it happened. My site was down and all my emails too. When I called them I was told they are moving their routers to another location! I was shocked so I asked why didn't they give advance notice to us? The customer service told me that it's not possible to do that cos they won't know when that's going to happen. When it happens, it happens. Can't really accept such a reason that you can relocate your router just like that? I've moved servers before, and I know lots of planning went into it and scheduling too. So I still can't figure out how they can do this. He told me it'll be up in the next 15 mins, but it took more more than an hour to get it up again. I'm pretty upset with this. But it also taught me a lesson that we should have a backup server in case things like this happen again? Which the customer service guy said it probably will!

I am on Bluehost too. There were some problems some time back, but since the last couple of months things have been running well.
