I'm new to blogging and web dev. I just got my domain and hosting, and have installed wordpress. So, my question is, do you think I should start blogging right away, even though I do not have the look and feel of the site as I want yet. There is a learning curve to get things to look and feel how I want them too. Should I just making changes as I blog along, or should I have things set as I want before I start. I have a perfectionist problem and I always seem to want to have things perfect before hand. I'd eventually like to make a buck or two from the site. |

Just start it. You can change anything you want later EXCEPT for 1) The domain 2) The actual address of the articles (sidsavara.com/about-sid-savara for example should never change - Google gets unhappy when pages that used to exist are not there) I have purchased a theme I really like and am taking a blogging course, as well as subscribed to some blogging forums. Not going to list them here as I feel it's only sort of on topic, but I too am a perfectionist - I am writing 1 post a week while tweaking my website as well right now, and intend to increase post frequence once I am "done." We'll see if done ever comes =) |

I agree with sidsavara - GET STARTED! Perfectionism is often procrastination cleverly disguised. If you keep working out every detail to perfection, but never really get off the ground, what's the point of the perfection you're creating? Another thing you should do is google "monetize your blog". You should find plenty of resources that shows you how to start making money on blogging. One of the best articles out there is written by Steve Pavlina, the owner of this forum. Here's the url to his monetizing blog: How to Make Money From Your Blog |

Hi Graphite, the others said it well, you can start blogging right now, I did the same and although it's a little extra work to tweak the design besides posting, you can handle it, and those few bucks can also come in a few days But it's very important to choose a theme in which you don't want to modify too much in the future, so you can change it whenever you like. |

graphite, are you familiar with Elvis Presley? He sings a song called "fools rush in" I think there's a lot of value in that phrase. Prepare the site, and then launch it with some solid, valuable content. Best of luck with your endevour. |

You can change most things, except the address and the domain as Sidsavara says. Consider the structure of URLs - called permalinks - as a change to them can mean any external links (e.g. from other websites) go into a black hole or a 404 error. I think you need to consider a portable format. Wordpress support this, on my blog it uses a derivative of the post title rather than an arbitrary document id. |

Hey Graphite, Welcome to the wonderful world of blogging :-) I'd echo chopsaw, and say don't rush in TOO fast. Why not give yourself a set period of time (say, a week or a fortnight) to get the blog design "tweaked" how you want it. Then launch in with the posting. Some sites I found really helpful when I launched my first Wordpress blog were: Blog Tips to Help You Make Money Blogging - ProBlogger - check out the Blogging for Beginners series in particular: Blogging Tips for Beginners Daily Blog Tips - Blog Design - Daily Blog Tips might answer lots of your questions Copywriting tips for online marketing success from Copyblogger - brilliant for content-writing tips. Lorelle on WordPress also has excellent advice on all aspects of Wordpress and blogging in general. Good luck with your blog, Ali |

Thanks everyone for your input so far. I've started pushing the content out as well. Keep in mind that I'm pretty new to all of this, so any input on the site would be great. My Blog: Mastering the Flame |
