I'm looking for an optimal option for using SQL on my iBook running OSX 10.3.9. I'm quite familiar with relational databases, but have really only used Filemaker Pro and a little Access. As Filemaker isn't SQL based, I only have a little experience with it. I want want to learn on the fly, though. I don't have much experience running command-line programs, but I'm not against learning if I had the proper tutorial. Something with a nice GUI would work, too. Any suggestions, both about what to install and references to use? Access would be ideal if I owned a PC, as it's graphical but also allows for SQL code inputs. Thanks in advance for the help. |

I recommend using NeoOffice for mac. Neo office is a special compilation of Open Office. For rational databases I would also recommend installing MySQL on your mac: MySQL AB :: MySQL 5.0 Reference Manual :: 2.3.10 Installing MySQL on Mac OS X |

Look into the free combination of the MySQL database (MySQL AB :: The world's most popular open source database) and a front-end like CocoaMySQL (http://cocoamysql.sourceforge.net/).

| SQLite is great for small things and learning. It's very powerful, yet light. I don't think they have a mac support, but they do offer source code. Maybe you can compile it from source. But if you want "The Real Thing"(tm), then get MySQL for sure. I like phpMyAdmin as the front end interface, but it requires a web server as well. |
