Sure something can be done. Don't buy it. Simplicity. Going on a crusade against the iPhone isn't going to get anyone anywhere. All you can do is do things the way you feel is right. Again, like I said, the problem is that the FOSS folks WANT the iPhone, but want it in a fashion that isn't going to happen.

| I was just about to head over here and post a thread called 3G iPhone - One Week Later. Since this already here... Like a dork, I waited for a few hours. I had a book, I had an iPod playing Peter Gabriel's instrumental "Passion" to eliminate the drone of the crowd and background noise. I've wanted an iPhone for a year, so I decided to pick this one up. I was hesitant about picking up a phone bill (my parents have been exceptionally nice about this since they moved out of state), but I realized it was in the budget, so why not? There's a lot of hatred for this phone, but it's not for everyone. That's fine. No, you can't do certain things on it. Show me a phone that does everything the iPhone does and then everything that people want the iPhone to do and you have a $1000 phone that few will buy. Personally, I don't care about the OS. The iPhone does what I want - calls people, texts people, emails people, surfs the web (with a VERY cool surfing interface IMHO), takes simple camera phone pictures, and has some cool little applications that help me find people, places, and things. This phone will never be perfect for everyone, and if it weren't made by Apple, no one would be talking about it and not near as many people would be buying it - look at the Instinct. Very cool phone, but there aren't a million blog posts or forums topics about it. I don't get the whole hating on Apple (or for that matter, PC) trend. Use one or the other (or both!) and roll with it. I have a Dell XPS laptop, and an iPod and iPhone 3G. One was affordable (XPS) and the others were universal for most things that are coming out for audio and phones and have smooth ass interfaces. End rant. |

| Apparently the Open Moko is pretty much a UI nightmare. OpenMoko Train Wreck on Vimeo All in all, the iPhone 3g seems like a pretty good deal. I was talking to some friends today who bought one the day it came out, they really like it. Little expensive though -- the lowest plan is $70 / month isn't it?

| Just sad that he devotes movies to prove how bad the openmoko is compared to the iPhone. The purpose of the openmoko is IMO to open the cellhone market for open source developers. I also think that the Neo Freerunner was released on a wrong label. It is far from consumer ready. If you love hacking linux, you are going to love this phone, if you don't know how to use a linux shell, stay away from it :d

| The plans are kind of expensive, but not terrible compared to most other unlimited Data plans currently on the market. I'm paying about $100 a month for unlimited data, 200 texts and 900 anytime minutes (which I wish there were more of!). Hopefully, their unlimited everything plan will drop down in the next year, and I'll be able to get all of that for $100 like Sprint or Verizon. |

| I'm a developer too, which, I develop mainly web apps on the Mac platform. Dan, that article does point out some very good points. But the thing is, a lot of it *can* be done, albeit by circumventing Apple. The reason why Apple is so successful and the user experience is so good, is because they control a lot of it. There's ways to get around it if you want, but for the general consumer, it's much better than most offerings because of that very reason. Even as a developer, I feel they have a bit too much control, but it does make it a lot safer for the majority of users.
