Default Ruby on Rails

My son has worked as a software engineer for a Fortune 500 company. I believe it was mostly Java, maybe C++ and some of that sql stuff, but not sure. I know nothing.

He wants to work in Ruby. Anyone have any tips on his getting employment doing that? What kind of employer would he target? He'd like to telecommute or work locally here without relocating. Any info or thoughts will help.

Thanks.

Lots of startups use Ruby on Rails.
Rails is one of the primary languages of many "Web 2.0" companies.

Sites like workingwithrails.com have jobs.

Also try:
Tech Jobs: Design, Programming, Rails, Executive, and more.
Tech Gigs: Design, Programming, Rails, Executive, and more.

Ruby is good - Python would be my choice. If he wants to learn Ruby though, tell him to go for it. It's a strong language from what I hear.

I absolutly am in love with Ruby and with Rails. Ruby is such a beautiful language, and flexible as hell.

Here is a list of websites that offer rails jobs. JobPostings in Ruby on Rails

If I was your sun, I would aim for startups or mature startups that are allready started (weird speaking, but I hope my point crossed the communication channel)

Thanks you kindly, I'll tell him. He seems quite taken with it.

I understand about the startups, different stages.

Thanks.

A great way to get started with Ruby is to contribute to an open source project. There are a number of open source projects going on in Rails.

Aside from giving him some accomplishments to list on his CV, this would also give your son a feel for the rather different zeitgeist of the kinds of companies that have adopted Ruby, which will in the main be quite different from Fortune 500 and a very different style of collaboration. It may be a culture shock to him even if he thinks he wants to escape the Big Corporate world.
