JimC will become famous soon enough
Default My newest project.

Hey everyone. Thanks to Steve and all of you guys, I raised about $120 on my first blog (smalltownbigshot). It's been almost a year since I started it and I pay about $10 a month for hosting... so it pretty much paid for itself, which I'm pretty proud of.

Learning from the mistakes I have made and carrying over the new skills that I learned from that project, I have started a new one. This one will focus more on being valuable than just rambling about my own philosophies and beliefs.

It's called l2internet.com

It's focused on providing Internet education for all skill levels. Beginner articles (like Internet 101) all the way to PHP scripting tutorials and network topology.

What do you guys think? What kind of stuff would you like to see offered?

Thanks for the support,
-James

Congrats James!

I'd like to see some tutorials and comparisons of the different shopping-cart systems available. Just a thought.

Definitely!

I plan to start with basic Internet articles, then slowly move up to the Web and web design. I plan to write a lot of articles on SEO/SEM, E-commerce etc... so I will do one for shopping carts.

Thanks!

Yeah, I love SEO too.

Allthough, my love affair with SEO, a lot of times, feels the same as marrying a manic-depressive. Really interesting, but man, its exhausting to keep up.

How about how to set up a membership site without paying a fortune? Or just how to set one up, I have no clue.

That's a good idea. I actually learned that a week or two ago. It's really easy. A paid membership that is.

If you mean a simple register/log in script, that's even easier.

That would be awesome!

Both would be great and then we could compare which is better/easier?

How about how to deal with a forum? I know it's supposed to be easy but I actually shut down a forum 'cause my server crashed because of bots. I have no idea how to keep them out. There's other little things too. I searched the 'net looking for help and came up with nothin'.

Yikes! Did your forum use captcha on the registration page? If so, there's a way to edit the captcha code to make it more obscure.

I used to have porn bots on my forums at smalltownbigshot.com but I made a couple changes to the captcha code and I haven't had 1 bot since.

I'll definitely write an article about this.

Cool, it's good to see that you're having some success. Like everyone else on this thread, I too, spend my entire day obsessing over the world of SEO. It's always rewarding to see that increase in traffic and see the Google ranking moving on up. I love it!

If you haven't guess by now, I am getting this site launched in a special order.

I started out with basic, simple internet articles and I am progressively moving up to more complicated subjects.

I have now started my tutorial on Web Design.

Towards the end of this tutorial I will cover SEO/SEM and promotion, blogs etc... But thats just for the articles.

In the future, I will use the blog aspect of the site to cover new up-to-date things that I discover (SEO, design tricks, product reviews etc...)

So much to write!

Nice man, at first glance I thought it might be a straight uphill battle with you since W3schools.com is so large & well known, but you've found a way to take a different more explained approach more on the design/creation side.

I do intend to stick to more casual, design focused lessons, but I can only explain it so easily. I have been adding HTML lessons and it's a lot harder than I expected to explain them in a way that everyone can understand. Experienced users would probably fall asleep.
