Thanks for the link;
Does anyone have any experience if it is worthwile to setup a directory in order to generate some income. Or is this more a waste of time?
I am thinking of offering premium paid listings in the directory as well as free links. Obviously the premium links will result in better positioning and fast turn-around time.
Apart from this I would add Google Ads to the site as well.

I just took premium listings off a site for a client ... they discovered the ad revenue from giving everyone detailed listings (and generating better search traffic) is greater than the fees for premium listings.
Also, unless you have *serious* traffic, who will pay for a listing? Why would they? What are you going to offer?
