| I have made some effort to learn the technologies necessary for web application development (JavaScript, AJAX, php, css, etc.) but the biggest problem I run into is the workarounds required to make sure your app works the same way across browsers. This is a real hassle and it seems like it would be a lot easier to ensure consistency by using something like Flash (or Silverlight?) that runs within a plugin installed to your browser rather than base HTML and the rest. I have not done a lot of web application development being primarily involved in developing desktop applications. Can someone tell me where I'm wrong or enlighten me? |

| That is really the big argument in favour of using a runtime environment. That said, with any runtime you will probably end up with versioning issues anyway - people having different versions installed. Most of the modern libraries are pretty good at maintaining browser compatibility. I use Scriptaculous and Prototype and they work in all the major browsers.
